Shell PH Allows Motorists To Offset Their Carbon Emissions With This Unique Program

Hand-in-hand with the launch of its Shell Recharge EV charging station, Pilipinas Shell becomes the first energy company in the country (and first Shell market in Asia) to offer a carbon offsetting program to the general public.

Part of their commitment to foster a net-zero goal by 2050, the Nature-based Solutions (NBS) Carbon Offset Service is an offshoot of their B2B Fleet Solutions which was launched to corporate clients last year. While the fleet-centric Voluntary Carbon Offset program targeted fleet and companies, the NBS Carbon Offset Service allows everyday drivers to compensate for their carbon emissions each time they refuel.

During the roll out of the NBS Carbon Offset Service, Pilipinas Shell recognized the first carmaker in the country to participate in their Voluntary Carbon Offset program—Bermaz Auto Philippines, the exclusive distributor of Mazda vehicles in the country. With the help of Shell, Mazda was able to offset around 11,000 kilograms (11 tons) of carbon dioxide from their fleet’s overall fuel expenditure in 2021.

Now, for an additional service fee per liter (P 2.50), the general public can now compensate the equivalent carbon emissions from their fuel purchase. In turn, the service fee will be converted to equivalent carbon credits from Shell’s independently verified global portfolio of nature-based afforestation, reforestation, and conservation projects.

All of Shell’s carbon compensation projects are thoroughly selected and backed up by international standards such as the Verified Carbon Standard administered by Verra. Third-party auditors are also used to verify the integrity of Shell’s screening process for carbon compensation projects.

The NBS Carbon Offset Service will be initially available across 15 sites in the greater Metro Manila area, with plans to grow to over 100 sites in total by the end of the year. Full details of how customers can sign up for the NBS Carbon Offset Service will be announced in the next few weeks.
