Simply Brilliant: Driving the Hyundai Eon to Baguio

Photos by Ulysses Ang
Normally, when you think “road trip”, your mind gravitates towards bringing a crossover or a large van with you where it is you need to go. So when we were invited to drive Hyundai’s newest (and smallest) city car, the Eon up Baguio, there were questions as to whether the diminutive vehicle would actually make it in one piece. We actually conjured up scenarios where the Eon would be thrown about by the crosswinds of passing busses or stalling up the steep climb up Kennon Road.

Reading through the Eon’s spec sheet reveals our reservations about taking it some 300 kilometers north of Manila. At just 3.49 meters in length, the Eon is just as long as other car’s wheelbase. It’s powered by a 0.8 (not a typo) 3-cylinder engine (again, not a typo) packing just 56 horsepower and 75 Nm of torque. It’s got wheels no larger than a standard ruler at 13-inches (with 155/70 sized tires). And its fuel tank measures just 32 liters reserve and all.

Yet, Hyundai touts the Eon as a properly thought of, properly made car. And to their credit, they got it right. We found the overall styling both inside and out appealing and well integrated into the rest of the Hyundai line-up. The GLS model that everyone drove boasts of a nice mix of standard features including power steering (with a tilt-adjustable column), door locks, and front windows. There are also nice surprises including an integrated audio system with iPod and aux-in connectivity as well as a standard luggage cover. Among its competitors, the Eon is well-made and sturdy without an ounce of cheapness despite its surprisingly affordable P 498,000 price tag.

Forty motoring journalists and Hyundai club members descended on Hyundai North EDSA for breakfast and a short briefing. Before long, the first challenge is issued: a fuel economy run stretching from Hyundai’s largest dealership to a designated petrol station in Rosario, just before the climb up Kennon Road. The rules are simple: drive the Eon in a predetermined route with the air conditioning on and the windows rolled up. Everyone is then split into pairs, and this time, I see myself being partnered with Neil Pagulayan (Neil Almighty) of 99.5 RT once again.

As the group split up on NLEX and SCTEX, the others got clever and started turning off their Eon’s A/C compressor turning the car into a mobile sauna; others went to the extreme of folding their side view mirrors—a move which is dangerous, bordering on the irrational, just for a cash prize. Meanwhile, Neil and I abided by the rules and proceeded to drive our Eon as conservatively as possible. We kept our engine revs as low as possible by shifting to the next higher gear as quickly as our Eon’s little engine could. The Eon doesn’t have a tachometer, but it did have a shift indicator telling Neil when to shift up or down to remain economical. With Neil keeping a close eye on the road and on his speed, I focused on the road book as well as any obstacle like slow-moving tricycles that may slow us down. After a total of 4 hours and 44 minutes (we did both legs in exactly 2 hours and 22 minutes), we reached the petrol station in Rosario and filled the Eon to the brim. In the end, we achieved 23.406 km/L—not enough to win (the highest recorded mileage is 30.532 km/L), but proof that the Eon is indeed one fuel-efficient vehicle.

With all 20 Hyundai Eons filled up, it’s finally time to climb up the winding and steep Kennon Road. Neil, still relishing his time behind the wheel of the fuel economy challenge, volunteered to finish the driving duties. By circumstance, the heavens poured out so safety is of utmost importance. Everyone but a couple of guys stayed in relative formation going up. The Eon proved itself well-grounded, stable, and safe to drive up the mountainous road. Above all, it’s proof that its small 0.8-liter engine can indeed do the deed despite carrying two adults, luggage, and a full stack of food up this challenging road. A far cry from when our parents recommended cars with at least 2.0-liters of displacement for the climb up Baguio.

The next day, the Hyundai Eon had to prove its mettle as a city car by tackling the tight confines of Baguio City in a photo scavenger hunt contest. This time, instead of being split into pairs, Hyundai split everyone into groups of four. Clues were handed out and teams just had two and half hours to find each of the five tourist destinations. Neil and I teamed with Bam Olivares of The Daily Tribune and Ira Panganiban of Power Wheels as we searched for: Shalan Ti Kabadjo, a horse riding path in Camp John Hay; Mansion House, the Philippine President’s official summer residence; Teacher’s Camp, a popular camping ground and training center for teachers; The Philippine Military Academy; and the Baguio Botanical Garden, one of the largest gardens in the city and home to the Igorot Village.

In the course of the two and a half hour challenge, the Eon proved its maneuverability, especially at the Teacher’s Camp where we had to do an impromptu U-turn on a tight, one-lane road just to go out. Thanks to the car’s small footprint and compact 4.5-meter turning radius, we managed to squeeze the Eon back to the main roads. Baguio City regulars and residents also know how challenging it is to find parking, but again, it proved to be no problem for the Eon as we managed to squeeze to our lunch venue, Casa Vallejo at the Hill Station with some time to spare.

In typical Filipino tradition, no trip is complete without shopping for souvenirs and pasalubong. So when free time officially started, I took an Eon and made my way to Good Shepherd for some ube (yam) jam. Once there, a couple of guys engaged me in a conversation about the Eon while waiting in line. They asked whether it’s good to drive, if it’s really economical, and what the price is. I told them about the group’s experience on fuel economy, about going up Kennon Road, and even about how nimble it is on city streets. Remarkably, I made a mistake: misquoting the price at around P 570,000—that’s over P 70,000 above the retail price of the Eon. Yet, people still find it remarkable value. If only I could tell them the Eon actually cost just P 498,000, they’ll be pleasantly surprised for sure.

In the end, that’s what the Hyundai Eon is all about: full of surprises. Cars below the P 500,000 have always been regarded as cheap and disposable, where people buy it because they didn’t have a choice. The Eon is poised to change all that. Much like what they’ve done with the rest of their passenger car line-up, the Hyundai Eon is offering a brilliant mix of design, engineering, sophistication, and value. The fact that we made it to Baguio and back, while reveling in its performance and comfort is a testament to the Eon’s capabilities. And next time you need a car for that road trip, you need not look further than the Hyundai Eon.

  1. If we judge all of the three close rivals Alto 800,Beat,Spark,EON would be a better option on the grounds of looks, price and mileage. Its pricing, features and mileage are real USP of it.People are just curious to know What is the mileage of Hyundai EON on highways and in EON?Its also a important parameter before buying nay car.

  2. Sorry.. but Eon is a useless car.. it will give you a problem after a month or two.. suspension, gearbox, rattling sound..

  7. We have bought our Eon GLS just yesterday (April 26, 2014). The performance is good, fuel efficient, and have a sporty and fluid looks. My only problem is the gear shift indicator. It indicates whether to shift up, but when you need to shift down, there are no recommendation from the indicator. But overall, this car is good, and i recommend it.
PS: nice article and nice review!

  8. @joseph, you're right about the shift down.. bought mine last 04032014.. so far its very fuel efficient... I'm still amazed how we reached subic zambales fro marilao and then going back with just 1k worth of gasoline.. only downside is , since its a compact car , you'll feel even the slightest bump of it..

  9. I'm a full time pick up 4X4 wheel driver but when bought my EON last Feb 2014, due to the exterior look and a head turner said by my other friends. The style if simple and engineered design due to aero dynamic. AC and lights are very good, but the engine performance looses while the AC was open and going up hill. When I turned off the AC, it back to normal. Well that's what you get on a 800cc engine. But I thought that the fuel indicator was broke due to I gas up at NLEX Shell 1K going to Mt. Samat the fuel gauge drop only 1 bar approx. 80 km travel distance. Fuel efficiency and economically, I recommend 2 thumbs up. But engine performance, need to improve esp. if the AC was on.

    1. Got an Eon last year August... your right a head turner oto... after 5 days I got my Eon we travel it to Baguio and we are very impressed with the fuel efficiency and performance specially on pave roads, I already tried to speed up to 130-140kph with my Eon at SLEX. Last year November I travel my EON to Tacloban and Palo Leyte after 3-days Yolanda struck Leyte and Samar. We rescued my sister and our nephews. We travel 1,857kms Montalban-Tacloban-Palo-Montalban. When we arrive at Tacloban edge of San Juanico Bridge the traffic is awful we spend around 10 Hours for a 4km road due to debris. Believe me Eon is tough even though it only has an 800cc engine displacement, on pave roads don't be afraid to do speeding, the engine will be more quite, wont drag, wont vibrate, wont blow up. I've already tried and tested Eon's performance. And believe me you can pursuit to an SUV's specially on high long curved road. But be careful to do this and fasten seat-belts always.

    1. My goodness, who told you that? A dealer from Mitsubishi or Toyota? Think of it this way, the reason why Toyota parts re made so available is becuse their market startegy is to make money on the aftersales. They have predetermined the life expectancy of specific car parts and have scheduled the production of the spares. Thus, they maintain their company's profitability. Hyundai, Honda, Kia, Mitsubishi and euro car brnds don't think the same.

    2. Just imagine, hyundai eon give 5 years warranty.. did other brands give the same warranty too?

    3. Yes, Mitsubishi Mirage G4/Mirage line.

  11. Who the heck told you its a disposable car? Hyundai might sue you for making that kind of statement. i suggest you can do your homework yourself to find and proved that this is a dispo oto. Siguro sa mga new model car i would say parts are not available in banawe yet or any auto supply na makita mo sa kanto it will took year/s to have a replacement engine and under chassis parts or even its body parts except sa mga accesories marami narin lumabas. You try to buy a WIGO and have it engine blow up repair it and look for a parts i would say you can find nothing yet in the under ground market. Only Toyota can give you an answer that how to have the parts. Same with Hyundai try to buy an Elentra 2014 have it bump on a light post i dont know when can you have a replacement for a bumper...

  15. eon- appx 21 kilometer per liter (along the hway)
wigo- appx 16 kilometer per liter (along the hway)
.. so economically speaking choose eon

  29. Have my EON GL M/T this August 2014. Any suggestion to increase KMPL? By using A/C, under or over tire pressure does reduces milage (right PSI please?). My 4 liters traveled only 50KM in city and hi-way driving. Guys what's your recommendation.....Dasmarinas, Cavite

    1. the dealer told me at 32psi. that what we used.
gas consumption maybe due to traffic but normally it should average 20+KM/liter.

      Delete
    2. Tire specs says 30 psi (nominal load). As to your fuel consumption, u have to understand that fuel economy is very much affected by driving (traffic) conditions. Knowing Dasmariñas, your lucky to go 12.5km/L. A Vios would range from 7-8km/L in that type of situation. Take it from me, got an Eon for the past 16 months.

    Any sadgestion for gasoline?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Go with Shell Fuelsave 91, it gives your engine an additional "kick". Eon engines are not high compression-type engines. Therefore, they need minimal octane fuels. PS, don't use Petron Super Extra 91 for your eon. It gives "knocks" and rattles to my Eon.

      Delete
  32. Leaded gasoline na yata yung gold ng caltex.
Alam ko hindi papasok yung nozzle ng pump sa gas inlet kasi. Unleaded gas lang ang pwede sa eon as far as i know.

  44. got my eon last month and i have mix reaction with this car

1st. rattle engine sound inside your car during idle. (it feels like ur inside a diesel car like innova diesel)

2nd. wala pang 1 month, 1100km odo reading i have issues with the aircon compressor. it gives the constant on and off sound during idle which is not norman for ANY cars. not cooling during idle and the clicking and vibrating sound is irritating.

3rd. not really fuel efficient. 9.2km/l ro 9.7km/l pasig rosario to makati via C5 area. they say kaya 15km/l but doubt it.

4th. no RPM gauge so u need to buy a aftermarket RPM gauge so u know when to shift. (its hard to look at your dashboard from time to time to see the tiny shifting indicator)

5th. headlight and fog light has dew inside during rainy season.

    good side

fun to drive, cheap to maintain, aircon is really cold.

    1. about the fuel efficiency issue, i think it depends on the driving habit..for the RPM gauge, i think most experienced MT drivers, just kind of listen to the engines rev (if that's what they call it) or (for me) pinapakiramdaman ko lang kung kelangan na mag shift kase maririnig mo naman eh... but i have to agree it's fun to drive... easy city driving..

    1. We travelled toTuegagarao and passed the zigzag, Wala naman problema. I turned off the aircon, though, kapag, nag overtake. Eon is a small car, you have to learned to manage its energy...for me.. we are happy with it.

    2. Same concern here...pagtraffic paakyat like in Tikling all the way up to Antipolo, stand still ang kotse at times. Uusad kaya coming from a complete stop then moving uphill???

-battery will charge when you push the break pad

Pinacheck up ko na sa CASA sabi baka may problema sa clutch. Or they need to check it for 2 days.. then if pasok sa warranty ang defect libre ang service. Pero pag hindi magbabayad ako. Anyone who could advice me about the warranty? Di ba 5yrs warranty tayo? And sa tingin ko defect ng kotse yun so i think repair must still covered by the warranty.
