Subaru Debuts WRX Concept at New York International Auto Show
Subaru has finally taken the wraps off the WRX Concept--a design study that serves as the clearest indication of what the production WRX would look like come late this year. Subaru has purposely given sparse mechanical specifications of the WRX Concept as it serves mainly to give "hints" to the design language of the production WRX.
Measuring in at (LxWxH): 4,520 mm x 1890 mm x 1390 mm, the WRX Concept is shorter in both length and height but wider than the current WRX STI. The WRX Concept also has longer wheelbase at 2,760 mm (the current model is 2,625 mm). Aside from the enhanced muscularity of its proportions, the WRX Concept carries a very aggressive look emphasizing Subaru's two key trademark technologies: the powerful turbocharged engine and the Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system.
Upfront, the WRX Concept features the brand's trademark hood scoop as well as fender ducts, and a pronounced power bulge. At the back, the WRX Concept features a dramatically curved trunk that acts as a rear spoiler. Combined with the now iconic hexagonal grille, fender flares, and "hawk-eye" headlights, the WRX Concept looks strong, solid, and outright sporty. Other sporty cues include the large quad-tailpipes shooting out from the back as well as the aggressive rear diffuser. The WRX Concept also carries a carbon fiber roof for a lower center of gravity while 245/40R20 Dunlop tires and forged BBS "RI-D" Duralumin wheels give added cornering ability.
The Subaru WRX Concept is painted in WR Blue Pearl III, which is a modernized take on the traditional WRX WR Blue color. Florescent yellow is also used as accents throughout the car including the badge, calipers, and exhaust finisher.
Though no details about powertrain were given, reports indicate that the all-new WRX will feature a version of the turbocharged FA20 engine which is already being used in both the JDM Legacy GT as well as the new Forester XT. Reports say that the WRX may have more than 280 horsepower on tap mated to a 6-speed manual.
The production version of the Subaru WRX is expected to debut at the Tokyo Motor Show in November.
