Review: 2014 Toyota Vios 1.3 E TRD Sportivo


You’ve got to hand it to the folks at Toyota; in a span of a few years, maybe two at the most, they’ve managed to inject some adrenaline into their once Valium-inducing line-up. Now, waku-doki or “fun-to-drive” has become the adjective that describes everything that Toyota does. Of course, some are more successful than others, but at the end of the day, they’re intensely focused on delivering cars that are more than just plain reliable and durable. Take for instance, the Vios, Toyota’s B-segment mainstay that’s the favorite of everyone from cabbies to young executives. It’s gone from a simple Point A to Point B transport to a sharply styled number that’s hip.

Now, on top of that, you add the magic of the one-make Vios Cup racing series. The end result is the immortal ethos of motorsports: Race on Sunday, Sell on Monday. However, as much fun as the Vios Cup Car is, it’s not exactly the most practical thing to drive to work or school. It’s tuned for high-end power and track handling, so unless you enjoy wringing the 1.5-liter 4-cylinder engine and having your dental fillings shaken at every bump, the most practical sporty Vios you can opt for is the Vios TRD Sportivo, which is essentially a Vios (whether 1.3 or 1.5) dressed in original TRD accessories.



Having driven the Vios 1.5 G before, it comes as a surprise that Toyota opted to use the 1.3 E A/T as the starting point for the TRD Sportivo; not that it really matters since with the TRD body kit, it’ll look like essentially the same car (of course with less chrome). In order to merit the “TRD Sportivo” badge, you’ll have to spend quite a bit of money: P 151,300 to be exact. For that, you’ll get: front bumper (P 20,300), side skirts (P 20,900), rear bumper spoiler (P 25,200), trunk lid spoiler (P 28,900), 17-inch TRD alloy wheels with center cap and tire valve cover (P 56,000 or P 14,000 apiece). That bumps up the price of a stock Vios 1.3 G A/T from P 762,000 to P 913,300—a 16-percent price jump. The same kit brings the P 812,000 1.5 G M/T from P 812,000 to P 963,300 or just P 186,700 short of the Vios Cup Car. Mind you, the TRD Sportivo doesn’t even get you other racing goodies like the Limited Slip Differential, roll cage, etc. What it does give you is good looks. Say what you want about the Vios, but after it’s kitted in TRD apparel, it looks pretty sporty. Plus, despite the lower bumpers and side skirts, the Vios TRD Sportivo won’t scrape though anything, guaranteed.

The Vios TRD Sportivo is generally a styling exercise, so there’s nothing changed under the hood. There are no mechanical modifications in here; just a couple of TRD parts such as the radiator and oil cap to add an extra bit of style. Since this is a 1.3-liter Vios, you basically get 85 horsepower and 122 Nm of torque. These figures aren’t sporty by any measure, but the boy racer look notwithstanding, the on-road performance is perfectly fine. Without any instrumented tests, the Vios feels perfectly perky being driven around in traffic, though top-end power is a bit wanting, especially if you traverse expressways a lot. And although the 2NZ-FE engine is known to be rather coarse sounding, its application here is surprisingly quiet; credit that to the Vios’s extensive NVH isolation measures. However, the extra sound deadening also makes this Vios a much heavier car than it ever was. And to top that off, there’s the body kit too. This doesn’t do wonders to the Vios’s fuel economy which is a shocking low 8.28 km/L, compared to the 1.5 A/T’s 10.40 km/L. Of course, the stickier Yokohama A Drive R1 205/45R17W tires do contribute to the poorer fuel economy figures.



Setting your expectation that this is purely a styling exercise, everything begins to fall into place the moment you step into the Vios TRD Sportivo’s cabin. With the 1.5 G’s two-tone black-and-beige cabin, putting on the aggressive aerodynamic kit looks just off. But since the 1.3 E has an all-black interior, it looks all business from the driver’s seat. There’s not one ounce of leather in the 1.3 G, but you won’t miss it. The interior’s well-made with consistent levels of fit and finish. Everything has a solid feel to it, whether it’s the buttons, stalks, levers or what have you. Unlike the exterior, there’s not much TRD bits in here save for what looks to be a Duracon shift knob. Still, there’s no faulting the Vios’s driving position. It’s not sporty as the most comfortable seating position is more upright, but there’s good visibility all around and the flat-bottom steering wheel actually does a great supercar impression.

Although the TRD body kit does seem a bit cost prohibitive for a typical Vios buyer, at least Toyota’s actually now offering would-be owners the chance to spruce up their ride even before they leave the showroom. In addition, if you do get your Vios through financing, the TRD body kit can also be amortized with your car loan; try doing that to an aftermarket body shop. The one-make Vios Cup has certainly raised Toyota’s sporty credentials tenfold and now with the introduction of TRD genuine accessories, they’re doing the next logical step: after all, motorsports is part engineering know-how, part marketing know-how.

    4. Mura po kasi ang vios. Pag fleet ang kunin mo, 10 vios or more, ang isa ay 300k lang, same na model din ng binibili niu twice or more the price. No offense meant. First hand info lang po sa inyo, kung gusto niu din mag tau ng taxi company. Same is true sa mazda, nissan, ford. Toyota kasi choice dahil kahit sa karinderya sa kanto ika nga may toyota na parts at super cheap xa. Kung gusto niu, fx na fortuner/montero/everest, 500k lang isa nian, same model din sa mga pinupunasan ng iba dian. Pero hindi viable kasi lakas kain ng diesel, lugi ang taxi company mo. Innova nman, sirain king. Kya grandia ang taxi fleet na malakihan, 500k din if you buy ten or more fleet taxi.

    1. vios 1.3e m/t nabili kulang no last sept 5 2014 about sa fuel consumption nya from abra to pagudpud, pagudpud to abra around 13 to 16km per liter. saka pag sa akyatan naman ayaw nya yung nabibitin. 5 passenger po yan. para sa akin po ok na ok yung handling nya. mga 5'11 po ako pag umopo sa likod ok na ok yung leg room. cluth ang tatapakan para ma start ang engine.

Bottom line kung gusto mo ng totoong kotse, wag ka style call center employee na super sa yabang na super poor nman, or in short bumili ka ng hind taxi or auv chipipay brand.   18. Napakayabang naman mag comment ng mga tao dito regarding vios as taxi. Ano bang issue dun? Hindi ba maganda nga yun dahil it means vios is battle tested? Yung mga nanlalait sa vios ano bang mga kotse nyo? Ganun ba ka big deal sa inyo na ang isang brand ay ginagawang taxi? Oa? Hehe I owned a 2014 vios 1.3 AT .. Dapat ang kukunin ko ay kia rio, g4 or accent.. Pero since toyota corolla ang dati kong car alam kong mas mura mag maintain ng toyota.. I dont care if its a taxi fleet. Di naman ako senador, artista or racer. I need a realiable car that can bring me here and there :)

    pangalawa, kamusta naman nanay nyo sa bar na di pa nakakauwi kakaprostitute para lang mabilhan kayo ng layaw nyo, tapos hihingan nyo ng gas pag may gimik kayo ng mga kapareho nyo ring palamunin?

Others boast their so called high performance and expensive cars when in fact they haven't shed an ounce of sweat to earn one. BTT: the vios is a very nice point A to point B car. i own one and i have no complaints. it has met and exceeded my expectations. it's a car i would definitely recommend. :)

  28. I have a Vios J MT and my first ever car (brand new) Para sa mga nagsasabing pang taxi. Im agree with that then i am very proud of it dahil pag nagsawa ako dto after 2 or 3 yrs bibilhan ko ng prankisa ng taxi with Php1300 per day Php 33800 a month ang kita sounds like I can afford a mustang or whatever. while your car is naluluma at bumabagsak ang value.

    By the way taxi in europe is AUDI :)

  29. Thanks to all the positive comments about the Vios . I just bought a 1.5 G A/T for my kids. They love it! I don't really care kung kino convert ito sa taxi. I see nothing wrong with it. The most important thing is the cars reliabikity . You don't need headaches to keep your car running . Sa mga negative na commentators, I would say if you don't like it just don't buy it! That's all.

  33. I own 2005 Vios 1.5g and i must say di sya pang taxi. Obviously yung mga nag sasabi, e walang alam o walang Vios.

    Mine is 10 years now and it still looks sexy. i just recently bought 17in BBS wheels and 205/45Z17 tyres. its now sexier.

    Well maintained by Toyota Bicutan every 3 months or 5000km whichever comes first. Thanks to service supervisor Randy Ikoy.

    By the way, whats the recommended tyre pressure? Originally on stock tyre it is 33Front 30rear.

  34. i am just thankful to have an efficient car as vios.. those people who say this is pang taxi are maybe the ones who can afford (kasama na yabang typical to many pinoy).. but for me i just need to be mobile for the nature of my work with limited budget and the vios is highly recommended thats why i got 1.. in doha qatar it is i believe the same as the yaris sedan and no one there is thinking that it is pang taxi..

    Baliktad naman ang dahilan ko, kaya bumili ako ng Vios ay dahil alam ko na kahit saang automotive store ako magpunta, may mabibili akong pyesa in case na may kailangang irepair, at mas mura din ang presyo ng spare parts ng vios kumpara sa ibang brands.

    Kaya kung praktikal kang mag-isip, siguradong Vios din ang pipiliin mo dahil sa proven reliability, durability, fuel efficiency, easy maintenance, at widely available parts ng vios.

    At sa dinami-rami ng vios sa pinas, halos lahat ng mga mekaniko e familiar na sa maintenance and/or repair ng vios kaya menos na ang Trial and error nila pag dating sa service.

    Ngayong minamaneho ko na ang Vios ko, lalo akong natuwa na ito ang pinili ko, dahil bukod sa maganda ang tindig, masarap din i-drive, maliksi sa kalsada, very comfortable ang suspension, maaasahan, at napaka tipid sa gas. Kaya naman pala Vios ang pinipili ng mga operators, kasi talagang panalo ka dito.

    Kaya kayong mga hambog na tanga, manahimik nalang kayo kung hindi nyo maintindihan kung bakit mas praktikal ang Vios -- mapa-negosyo man o pang sariling transportasyon.

  41. maybe next week makukuha ko na Vios 1.3E MT ko... yung corolla small body ko ko madalas na manglambing kada lambing magastos....kaya i decided to get a brand new na panghatid sa school ng mga anak ko para walang hassle na titirik ka sa kalsada lalo na kung umuulan...( naranasan ko na kasi eh ) ...tapos ng hatid UBER ko na kumita ka ng 700-1,000 petot in a short period of time pwede na!

  44. Marami kasi sa mga Pinoy very particular or picky pagdating sa itsura ng kotse. Porma over durability or safety features. True maraming taxi, Grab at Uber na taxi pero that is because of its durability and availability of parts. Though yung 1.3 variant is not as fuel efficient as before pero bawi naman sa cost of ownership.

    At the end of the day, choice ng car buyer yun. Pili siya ng swak sa budget niya at kung ano ang pinaka-ok para sa kanya. Owners need not explain their purchase sa mga taong manglalait. Be proud and happy with your purchase. Maraming namimintas jan pero malamang walang kotse yun. Kasi if you're happy with your purchase, no need to put down other people's choice. Just my two cents.
