The Roadster is Back: Mazda Reveals All-New MX-5

Just in time for its 25th anniversary, Mazda has finally unveiled the much-awaited, fourth-generation Mazda MX-5 at simultaneous events all over the world. Although we would have wanted to see Duran Duran belt out some vintage pop, we weren’t lucky enough to be at any of those launch events. Still, we’ve managed to gather the key message of the MX-5’s reveal: the roadster is back.

Considered as the best-selling two door sports car ever (Guinness Book of World Records says so), the challenge of the all-new MX-5 is to build up on the spirit of the original. In Mazda-speak, the main engineering philosophy for the all-new (ND) model is: “Innovate in order to preserve”. In order to do this, Mazda had to go back to the drawing board; after all, the MX-5 will certainly become the brand’s poster child for its SKYACTIV suite of technology.

Clearly, the design of the all-new MX-5 reveals the latest evolution of the KODO design language. On the MX-5, designers wanted to make the passengers stand out and have done so by lowering the beltline, hood, and adding a sexy, bulbous rear-end. Plus at 3,915-mm x 1,730-mm x 1235-mm (L x W x H), it’s actually smaller than the outgoing NC MX-5. The wheelbase is at a relatively generous 2,315-mm. This means the all-new MX-5 has a bigger wheelbase-to-overall length ratio of any MX-5 before it. Plus, Mazda has revealed that the all-new MX-5 is much lighter (around 100 kilograms) than the outgoing model.

Though Mazda hasn’t revealed any engine specifications, it’s clear from the photos that the MX-5 uses a longitudinally-mounted 4-cylinder engine with SKYACTIV technology. This marks the first time SKYACTIV has been mounted in this fashion as all previous models equipped with SKYACTIV has them mounted transversely. Reports are circulating that the MX-5 may have a displacement anywhere between 1.5- to 2.0-liters. Whatever the displacement figure, expect it to have a high compression ratio as well as direct-injection technology. The transmission will be a 6-speed manual.

In terms of chassis, the MX-5 will have an electric power steering system (EPS) connected to front MacPherson Struts. The rear features an independent Multi-link set-up. Brakes are vented discs upfront and solid discs at the back. On all four corners are 195/50R16 tires with 4 lug wheels (for lighter weight) on the rims. All-in-all, Mazda promises the all-new MX-5 to have a dramatic leap in terms of Jinba-ittai driving fun.

The all-new Mazda MX-5 will be rolled out in global markets starting in 2015.

  2. Most of the 2-door sports cars are "overpriced". It's not for people who aspire only to drive 3rd-world diesel SUVs.

    1. Why in the hell would you compare a sports car to a SUV?

    2. He's not. He's just comparing the different preferences of different consumers... And that those who'd rather drive truck-based diesel SUV's wouldn't understand the appeal or why such cars like this would be priced that way.

    1. Quite true. Given Berjaya's aggressive pricing, I suspect the all-new ND Mazda MX-5 will probably retail for just below P 2-M.

    2. What's even more amazing is that the more capable toyota 86 is sold for only P1.6M.

    3. WHAT!?!..."more capable toyota 86"????...man...mx5 = for the purist...toyota 86 = ricer's dream car...wat the F!!!..."more capable toyota 86"...what the F!!!

    4. More capable meaning the toyota 86 has better horsepower and better handling.

  4. Good if Berjaya sells it below 2M. It should be priced at least the same or even lower than the 25th anniversary edition MX-5. Let's just keep our fingers crossed.

  5. there is no need to compare 86 to mx-5, they do not belong to the same category. stop whining, mx-5 is a convertible roadster, if toyota launches its mr-s spider here, then compare mx-5 with that.
