First Drive: 2015 Nissan X-Trail 4WD

Photos by Ulysses Ang
Driving up to Baguio, the City of Pines, was once considered an automotive torture test. It was where new cars are brought up in the hopes of getting back with tales how everything went smoothly or awfully wrong. Although those days are over, Baguio is still a commonly preferred destination to stretch a new car’s legs, and of course, act as a quick getaway. Thus, it wasn’t a big surprise that Baguio was chosen as the destination to shakedown the all-new Nissan X-Trail—the compact crossover that promises to signal the Japanese brand’s return to glory.

Reaching the flag-off point at Nissan North EDSA, there’s something about seeing 17 X-Trails parked side-by-side that leaves you in awe. By and large, it’s a show of strength—no other car manufacturer in recent memory has had this massive number of a convoy for a driving event. Next, your eyes focus on a single X-Trail and then it hits you: it’s a handsome looking thing. Whereas the first and second-generation X-Trails looked rather boxy and upright, this new one is sexy sleek with soft, flowing contours and just the right amount of curves and lines. It contains all the styling elements that tie it in with Nissan’s latest crop of products like the Sylphy and Altima without simply looking like a lifted version of one.

Around the X-Trail, there’s a good amount of chrome embellishments, headlined by the V-Motion grille. Flanking the grille is a pair of halogen headlights with boomerang-shaped LED daytime running lights which is niftily echoed in the rear lamp’s lighting signature. Across the line, the X-Trail rides on 17-inch alloys with fuel-efficient Goodyear Assurance Fuel Max 225/65R17 tires. One single nitpick though: the rear hatch handle could have been integrated into the panel above the license plate, like most crossovers, instead of just appearing a couple of inches above the bumper.

After the short briefing (and the mandatory photo opportunity), it’s time to board the cars. Stepping inside the X-Trail reveals a dramatic departure from the previous-generation models. The overall look and feel is certainly more premium with aluminum, carbon fiber, and piano black accents scattered throughout. The X-Trail feels larger than it really is, especially from behind the wheel. The small diameter steering wheel (for its size) and the expansive dash contribute to this and so does the higher seating position. The instrument panel is crisp, clean, and very easy to understand. There’s a full-color LCD that’s sandwiched by the analog tachometer and speedometer. Using the buttons on the steering wheel, the LCD displays a wealth of information from the usual trip computer functions to service interval reminders to even a screen that displays real-time torque distribution.

After disengaging the footbrake and slotting into reverse gear, the X-Trail automatically activates AroundView which offers a full 360-degree view within the car’s proximity using several cameras mounted around the X-Trail. It made getting out of the tight parking very easy and after that, you’ll never want to use anything else. The mad dash towards NLEX immediately reveals the X-Trail’s underlying character: this isn’t a sporty crossover nor is it pretending to be. Instead, it embraces the feel of a larger crossover—it’s less agile, but plusher and much more comfortable. And all the on-board systems from the steering, suspension, and even drivetrain are geared towards that fact.

Piloting the X-Trail 4WD means having the services of the QR25DE engine. It’s an evolution of the powerplant found in the previous X-Trail, but now packing 171 horsepower and 233 Nm of torque, which is about one horsepower and three Nm more than before. Mated to it is probably one of the best CVTs on the market today: Nissan’s Xtronic. It’s sweet and responsive, happy to hold revs in the range where power’s needed. It must be noted though that the engine does sound slightly boomy at the top end, thus it’s best to keep throttle mashing to a minimum. Pushing some 1,604 kilograms of weight, the X-Trail does feel initially sluggish off the line (or up hilly roads). As it gains momentum though, it gets into the zone. It’s a smooth operator with great levels of NVH isolation. Tire, wind, and road noise are kept in check even at high speeds enabling you to actually carry a normal conversation without having to shout. Nissan is promising top-notch fuel economy figures for the X-Trail, reaching up to 16.4 km/L in Japanese market tests. During this drive though, the figure topped out at 13.5 km/L and hovered at around 10 km/L throughout the trip. These figures were achieved with the ECO function turned on. This system turns on an ambient coaching light, regulates pedal input, and even the CVT’s response.

Driving the X-Trail is a fatigue-free experience. Aside from not having to deal with shift shock, the front seats are simply amazing. The “zero gravity” seats sound like something straight off the Home Shopping Network, but they absolutely work. Even after four and a half hours of driving, you won’t even feel a single ache or pain. And while driving, you won’t find yourself sliding around or wiggling for better support or comfort.

In terms of dynamics, the X-Trail is well beyond its predecessors. At low speeds, the electric power steering is feathery light and can be turned by finger effort alone. At higher speeds, it becomes nicely weighted with good on-center feel. Aside from good steering feel, the X-Trail rides comfortably on almost any surface. In the city, it’s simple and easy enough to maneuver, but it’s also stable and smooth on the highway. Nissan has also employed a host of technologies to keep the X-Trail on the road including Active Engine Braking that enhances slowing on grades and improving stopping feel, Hill Start Assist, and Hill Descent Control. There’s also Active Ride Control which applies the brakes and adjusts engine torque to reduce body roll and vehicle vibration. All these systems work well and largely go unnoticed by the driver unless you happen to find yourself in the ‘Chassis Control’ menu of the multi-function display.

Aside from its host of techy features, setting the X-Trail apart from most compact crossovers is the standard third row of seats. This bumps up the overall capacity to seven. Accessing the rearmost seats is easy with a second row that slides forward and back with the pull of a lever. But warned though: this is a feature clearly designed more for children. In other words: don’t think third row, think jump seats. That said, the second row is perfectly comfortable complete with its own air conditioning vents.

With a strong model name recall, the X-Trail is probably single-handedly the most important vehicle for Nissan Philippines to get right. And they have. With pricing that tops out at P 1,580,000, the X-Trail is speced and featured to compete in the ultra-competitive compact crossover segment. Buyers and pundits alike may have dismissed the Nissan brand of late, but the arrival of the X-Trail will undoubtedly change all that. Not only is it a far better offering than the model it replaces, it also manages to carve up a new reputation for being a comfortable and enjoyable crossover.

  1. In terms of feature, it looks like this is the best offer for the segment.. The problem is, its a Nissan.

whats the problem of it being a NISSAN???..
No known issues with the nissan GTR, Skylines, Pathfinders, titans, 370Z.. neoVVLS ( a lot better than BMWs Double VANOS).. etc etc
technically it's good.. its just the marketing that makes nissan show its sour thumb..

    2. Nissan service sucks. Dono about the new Nissan setup but I guess it still sucks. It takes years to inculcate a new culture. It doesn't change overnight, especially difficult to master customer service satisfaction.

    3. How about the sentra, old x-trail and grand livina? I have no clue about the reliability of those cars.

    4. Its a Nissan? wtf are u saying? FYI nissan is 4th largest car maker in world beating kia and hyundai, so what can you about the legendary GTR, was it Nissan?,. wla ka kang pambili? ali ka bilhan kita kia pride

    5. First of all, those GTR and other vehicles mentioned are not even officially sold here in the Philippines which makes your argument invalid. Nissan cars may be great outside of here, but here in the Philippines, their vehicles are commonly referred to as pieces of shit.

    6. Philippine-market Nissans generally have poor resale value.

      - His argument is valid, based on branding and technology regardless if it was sold here or not. It is really marketing, publicity and consumer acceptance. IMHO I used to be a Jap car fan, but nowadays technology and better offerings in design and specs can be seen in other cars makers from Korea or other countries. You can go research reviews and your own test drive experience. If you can get more bang for your hard earned dough, go for it. Your discipline in car maintenance is key to your ownership satisfaction. Of course, there is always bias to preferred brands.

    8. No its still not valid. The examples he used are high end Nissan vehicles.

    10. my first suv was an x trail and despite it's look i love love driving it. great performance and super comfy seats. everyone i who has ridden with me esp on long trips were pretty comfortable even those sitting at the back. performance wise, it never gave me an ounce of headache never had car troubles. i also loved the back seat converting into a storage. customer service wise, i am pretty happy. i'd bring in the car, if it takes more than a day or 2 to address the problem they tell me agad and even after they'd call and follow up on how the car is doing. i once told the customer service guy some money i left in the car was gone and the mechanic that fixed my car promptly called me up to say where he left it, and sure enough it was all there down to the last centavo. unfortunately, when it was time to change my car, the xtrail still had that boxy design, so i went with another suv. but i'm pretty sure once it's time to change my car again an xtrail will be at the top of my list

  3. Back seats are cramped. Bigger children wont be happy back there. Yet, its less claustrophobic than the current Santa Fe. The bird's eye view camera in the X-trail is really a big help. Can't Nissan make a better steering wheel? It looks kind of cheap, as well as the center console, it doesn't look premium.

    3. I already checked it, that's why I know the 3rd row seats are a bit cramped. I'm a mother of 3 kids and I'm looking for something better to replace my not so old Santa Fe. I checked the current Santa Fe but I was a little disappointed by it. I mean, local Hyundai stripped it from some of its standard features and tried to lower the equipment inside the car. On the other hand, the X-trail preserved its techs. Its just I don't like the looks of steering wheel and the instrument panel. Anyway its just a minor issue. Oh by the way, yep its not a full 7 seater (as if I could afford a full 7 seater...laughs) but they could have at least made or gave a little bit more space on the 3rd row. Santa Fe offers more space but it has small windows on the 3rd row and is more expensive.

      Delete
    4. Oh people can afford 7 seater 3rd world SUV. They exchange comfort and power for the 7 seater capability. People worship them because of that I guess.

      Delete
    5. This guy just crossed the line. FYI, SUVs are SUVs and CUVs are CUVs. Driving a 7seater CUV is way much better than driving a mini van, and the fact that there are only 2 decent mini vans (Honda Odyssey and Chrysler Town and Country) sold here and I dont know why but it costs a lot here. I know what you mean about 3rd world SUVs because they flood the streets here and I'm NOT into those cars. So don't you dare lecture me about it...(laughs). Oh! By the way, just to shut you up, I replace my cars every 6 or 7 years that's why I don't buy uber expensive cars.

      Delete
    6. What? I just said that if you want an affordable 7 seater, go for 3rd world suv. I'm also pro-cuv but you don't have to be so bitchy about it. Your santa fe is more expensive than most 3rd world suvs with 7 seats. Please intindihin mo muna ang context ng sinabi before acting like a total bitch, ok?

      Delete
    7. Okay, I understand that bitchy attitude of yours is caused by PMS. I "budged-in" on your comment because I disagree with what you said that there's no affordable 7 seater. There's the grand livina which is technically a 7 seater with the comfort of a typical sedan.

As for being an uneducated brat, who's the one who started being a bitch all of a sudden without actually understanding the context of what I said?

      Delete
    8. the lady just made a comment, no need to bash her and her comment and say things like getting things "out of context". You were being an A-hole from the your very first response to her comment. Real men don't fight with girls

    9. Thanks 10-24 @ 4:17 pm. I don't see anything wrong or offensive with my comments (except for the last one...hahaha). And the way he responded to me, its like he's trying his hardest to be smart, but he is obviously stupid...(laughs). And try to read his response (10-23 @ 9:08 pm) I don't know how he came to a conclusion that my issue is caused by PMS. Where did that come from? He's like a mad dog when he writes his comments...hahaha.

      Delete
    10. See, that's why you're oblivious to your own stupidity. Read the comments again. You said I crossed the line and you wanted me to shut up, now I'll ask you, isn't that a bitchy remark? Did I say anything offensive before that comment, or did you not understand the meaning of what I said?

  11. 1998 Nissan Sentra B14 1.6 SS owner here. Reliable as hell. Nalubog na ni Ondoy and Habagat past car seats, soaked computer box and all, buhay pa rin. Getting 8-9 kpl city and 12-14 kpl highway. Not bad for a 16 year old car with 300,000+ kms. Noisier than it used to be but this car may run forever.

This X-Trail looks nice but not digging the nose and the tail lights. Will do test drive next week.

    3. Thank you Mash Ortega. We have the first generation X-Trail, two of them actually (Silver 2003 2.0L and Brown 2005 2.5L) so this third generation is quite a departure from what we expected the evolution of this tried and tested SUV to look like. Our 2000 Cefiro Brougham VIP (A33) is in our garage. Made a mistake in LPG conversion and should've left the engine untouched. Such a waste of a sweet ride.

    4. In my opinion, the previous x-trail was really ugly especially when compared to its competitors in its time. Ngayon lang nagkaroon ng fighting chance ang x-trail. Ang ganda na ng itsura, it looks sleek and modern. If I were to pick between a cx-5 and x-trail, I'd definitely choose the x-trail.

Baka nahihirapan lang mag adjust ang mga current owners ng previous x-trails when in fact, miles apart ang design ng bago and I mean that in a good way.

  13. Sir Uly if you were to decide, CRV or XTRAIL? Priority is comfort and NVH.

  14. Mr. Ulysses,
Do you have any knowledge if Nissan will bring in the 2.5 4x2 or better, the
    diesel version?
The 2.0 is too puny for such big body, while the 2.5 4x4 is an exaggeration
for a city dweller like me.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I don't understand why the 2.5 diesel w/c has 171hp (good) only has 233Nm (bad) of Torque??? Glad to see Nissan being competitive again, back then thought they would just wither and die in the Philippine market

  17. The aftersale of nissan is bad because mahal yung parts , nissan parts are whole components and not sold piece by piece kaya mahal , but they are built like tanks ang wont break down that easily, i drive. A navara and im happy with it, my only complaint is probably its lack of tech.

Plus the ac is big factro since im here in qatar having vents on second row is a plus, as far as performance i think the asset is the new steering wheel its very light and smooth. Im not yet pushing its capability need to breakin first hehehe anyway it was a worthit buy. Give it a test drive you will love it=)

However, I saw a ISUZU MU-X over the weekend and wanted to know more. I looked it up online and it looks like a good third candidate vs. these two best sellers. Now, I am studying if I should get the ISUZU MU-X 4X2 LS-A A/T.
All three are within budget and are just a few thousand pesos apart so the price should be ok. Other decision factors I am considering are as follows:
    1. Performance
    2. Ride quality
    3. Fuel consumption/efficiency
    4. Maintenance costs

  35. i had a 2004 nissan xtrail. great ride - speed and handling wise. parang kotse ang confort, ang sarap patakbuhin. kaya lang ang lakas sa gas! going to and from silang, cavite, ubos ang full tank that cost(around 2007) 2k.
kung maglalabas ng diesel xtrail, i will definitely consider buying

  36. We own a Nissan X-trail 2015 2.5L 4WD. So far, so good! I am no car expert, but as a n owner I am very happy with it. Very comfortable to drive, the next thing you know you've already driven that far. Which means the seats are very comfy, steering wheel so easy to maneuver, nice aircon (beats the summer heat), with nice speakers, as if you're listening through your headphones, great suspension and handling. Performance wise it's fast and with an ECO mode option. We learned about the All-new Nissan X-trail through research. We don't normally just buy cars just because we already see a lot of it on the road, but we've read good reviews. So far we have only seen just 4 new X-trails running in our province as of the moment. And we compared its features with others in this segment (RAV4, CR-V, Subaru, Santa fe). Only Santa fe has 7 seaters among the ones I mentioned but its third row is more cramped than the X-trail's. It's more expensive, about 1.7M and it's not even 4WD and without a 360 camera which is very helpful for me with our Nissan X-trail. I don't have anything about Santa Fe, it's just the nearest contender to Nissan X-trail in terms of 7-seats, looks and pricing. By the way, we were able to fit 10 persons inside our 7-seater x-trail. Isn't it amazing? =D

  37. We own a 2nd gen x-trail 2.5. My wife loves it because of it's light steering. She has weak shoulder caused by an accident. No major issues so far and still drives like brand new. The best thing I like about the engine is that it got a timing chain!
