NAIAS 2015: Ford GT is Back
Ford is bringing its EcoBoost technology to the supercar race with the launch of the all-new GT. Picking up where the previous GT left off almost a decade ago (it was launched to commemorate Ford’s 100th anniversary), and in turn, nodding to the Le Mans-winning GT40, the all-new GT comes packing a new 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 EcoBoost engine pumping out some 600 horsepower to the rear wheels. This application makes it the most powerful production EcoBoost engine ever.
Developed from Ford’s IMSA Daytona Prototype race car, the GT’s engine will have an all-new port/direct dual fuel-injection set-up to improve engine response plus a low-friction finger-follower drivetrain. The twin-turbo V6 engine is mated to a 7-speed dual clutch automatic.
The Ford GT keeps its mid-engine layout and comes with a lightweight body constructed out of carbon fiber. In fact, Ford promises that the all-new GT will have one of the best power-to-weight ratios of any production car. The GT features a carbon fiber passenger cell with aluminum front and rear subframes in structural carbon fiber panels. In terms of design, the GT aims for extreme aerodynamic efficiency and as a result has a teardrop shape, curved windshield, and an active rear spoiler.
Though it has clear nods to the Le Man’s winning race car, the GT is thoroughly modern underneath with active racing-style torsion bar and pushrod suspension with adjustable ride height. At each corner, it features 20-inch alloy wheels shod with Michelin Pilot Super Sport Cup 2 featuring a unique compound developed for the GT (the reincarnated GT used Goodyear Eagle F1’s).
Inside, the GT features a fixed seating position with adjustable pedals and steering column to provide a good ergonomic fit to the driver. It will also have “F1-inspired” steering wheel that creates a stalk-less steering column and fully digital instrumentation and gauges. It will also have SYNC 3, Ford’s newest infotainment system. Production commences in 2016 and will be made available to select global markets just in time to commemorate the GT40’s 1-2-3 win at the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans.
