Volvo Philippines Launches R-Design Models with Night of the Arts (w/ Brochure, Video)

Volvo Cars Philippines launches its new 2015 R-Design models with the first-ever Volvo Night of the Arts. During the event, Volvo honored six influential and esteemed personalities in various fields of the arts. The six honorees are: Joanne Rae Ramirez, the late Jose “Pocholo” Ramirez, Raymond Lauchengco, Rolando Laudico, Ramon Orlina, and Randy Ortiz. Coming from different artistic backgrounds, they all embody the characteristics of the all-new R-Design models—dynamic, bold, and innovative.

Joanne Rae Ramirez, Editor-in-Chief of People Asia Magazine and a columnist in The Philippine STAR, represents style and substance. Like the R-Design Volvos, Joanne is beautiful, individual, and intelligent. As Joanne is known for her sharp wit and charismatic way with words, the 2015 R-Design Volvos cut an expressive and unique design. Upfront, the frameless Tech Matte Black grille features high-gloss black stripes, a silk metal diagonal, and a subtle R-Designed emblem. The new LED daytime running lights, now placed at the corners, reinforce the low, road-hugging impression. The front wheel arches also seem to wrap around the dynamic Ixion wheel (18-inch for the S60 and 20-inch for the XC60). At the back, a unique rear diffuser with aero kits is flanked by the R-Design tailpipes.

These R-Design Volvos aren’t just about looks either. At its foundation is power and dynamism represented by the late Jose “Pacholo” Ramirez. A legend in the regional motorsports scene, Tito Poch is a man filled with grit, determination, and the love for speed. Like Tito Poch, the new R-Design Volvos feature enhanced handling brought about by a stiffer suspension. The S60 R-Design features a chassis lowered by 15-mm and firmed up by 15 percent giving it a much more responsive drive. New rear monotube dampers are tuned to give a quicker response through cornering. Finally, stiffer bushings and front tie-blade bushings, and a front strut brace all counteract unwanted bouncing and shaking. Meanwhile, the XC60 R-Design sees a retuned suspension which is firmer and more balanced than stock. Revised shock absorber rates and anti-roll bars give it improved control and a sportier, road-hugging drive.

The music of the R-Design Volvos is available courtesy of powerful yet efficient engines. The S60 R-Design is available in both diesel and gasoline variants. The diesel-fed D4 peaks at 181 horsepower and 400 Nm of torque while the direct-injected turbo gasoline engine in the T4 does 180 horsepower and 240 Nm of torque. The XC60, too is available in both gasoline and diesel variants. Like the S60, the XC60 D4 does the same impressive outputs, while the new T5 puts out 245 horsepower and 350 Nm of torque. Like the aurally impressive engines, Volvo honored Raymond Lauchengco, the renowned singer, actor, stage performer, and director. Raymond has released eight studio albums and has received various major distinctions including representing the Philippines at the prestigious Tokyo Music Festival.

The rebel of the local culinary scene, Chef Rolando Laudico has reinvented Filipino food and turned it to a feast not just the palate, but the eyes as well. Like Rolando, the R-Design Volvos feature an interior that’s a blend of sophistication and sportiness. The black nubuck textile is combined with perforated leather and embroidered with R-Design logo giving it a comfortable yet imposing presence. In addition, the distinctive Adaptive Digital Display features the option to switch between three instrument panel layouts—Elegance, Eco, and Performance. Unique to the R-Design Volvos, the Elegance theme glows a radiant blue. Finally, a black headliner and new stainless steel tread plate with a bright blue ‘R’ complete the look.

The unmistakable sinuous curves and undulating lines of the S60 and XC60 make them an unmistakable presence on the road. The wide shoulders, noticeable hood bulge, and jewel-like precision to its lighting elements all make them modern day works of art. Like these Volvos, Ramon Orlina’s glass sculptures are masterpieces known the world over. Ramon has won a multitude of awards including recognitions at the ASEAN Awards for Visual Arts, Gold Medal of Merit bestowed by the Philippine Institute of Architects, and First Prize in the Sculpture Category of the II Bienale International del Baloncesto en las Bellas Artes 2000 in Madrid, Spain as well as numerous Honorable Mentions in international competitions.

Finally, Volvo prides itself in putting people first. From its easy-to-use and intuitive Volvo Sensus infotainment system to the use of natural, authentic, and allergy-tested interiors, they are all designed to make you more comfortable in the journey of life. In the R-Design models, Volvo makes use of new sport seats that give drivers a commanding view of the road while retaining the carmaker’s hallmark of unparalleled comfort. Like the R-Design Volvos, which are designed around people, Randy Ortiz’s designs have married fresh elements to classic designs making them unmistakably fabulous pieces that command presence and distinction. Randy has revolutionized men’s fashion and is now making a name for himself in women’s wear, bridal fashion and accessories.

Indeed, Volvo has created true art in motion with the all-new S60 R-Design and XC60 R-Design models. Both are intricately designed and built around people. Like these six individuals who are trailblazers in their respective fields, Volvo has never strayed from developing cars which are made to make life easier, safer, and more beautiful. From the three-point seatbelt to the groundbreaking City Safety technology, Volvo has combined art and motion. The new 2015 R-Design models move that forward by giving you a truly satisfying and rewarding drive.
