Goodyear Offers Glimpse of Future Tires
Goodyear rolled out two concept tires at the Geneva Motor Show which the company says will radically change the role of tires in the cars of the future. Though they are purely concepts at this point, Goodyear says they may play a role in developing practical innovations in the near future.
The first is the BHO3 tire which generates electricity through heat. When the tire flexes as it rolls during normal driving, it generates heat. The BHO3 is designed to capture this generated energy and can be used to charge a battery. This is a perfect application for electric vehicles or EVs which should optimize their energy generation capabilities. The BHO3 also has a low rolling resistance.
Goodyear sees that a tire such as the BHO3 can virtually eliminate the “range anxiety” experienced by owners of electric vehicles.
Another tire shown at Geneva is the Triple Tube tire which, as the name implies, has three internal tubes within the tire. These tubes are located beneath the tread and near the inboard and outboard shoulders of the tire as well as the center. An internal pump then moves air from the main chamber to the three air chambers making the tire automatically adjust depending on road conditions. This could mean one of the following: Eco/Safety position, Sporty position, and Wet Traction position. Imagine, a single tire could have the benefits of three different types of tires.
Although both of these tires are future concepts, they represent an essential aspect of Goodyear’s innovation strategy instilling a forward-thinking, market-back mindset in the company’s research and development teams.
I see a letter "L" at the center of the Triple Tube tire. Could this be a Lexus tire in the future?
