All-New 2015 Toyota Hilux Aims to Redefine Toughness

After months of intense speculation, leaked spy shots, and the entire hullabaloo, Toyota has officially revealed the all-new 2015 Hilux in at least two markets: Thailand and Australia (note: in these photos, the silver Hilux is the Thailand model while the blue is the Australian SR5 model). The eighth-generation model will be sold to over 180 markets, including the Philippines. Building on the nameplate’s loyal fan case and legendary reputation, the all-new 2015 Hilux has set the goal of “redefining tough”.

With this all-new Hilux, Toyota realized that toughness doesn’t end with the vehicle itself. Sure, the Hilux had to remain characteristically durable and rugged. However, they’ve come to realize that toughness also lies with the people inside; hence, it’s much more occupant-focused and easier to drive than ever before.

Toyota engineers got direct feedback from Hilux customers who drive their vehicles on varied terrains and conditions. In addition, development mules of the all-new model were made to drive through conditions ranging from rough, muddy forests to deserts with temperatures exceeding 50 degrees Celsius to flooded roads in the rainy season.

In the end, they developed a model which boasts of improved riding comfort that makes long drives less grueling, a quieter cabin, and enhanced cruising range thanks to improved fuel efficiency.

This “new era” of the Hilux promotes easy-to-drive, stress-free toughness. At the same time, it’s every bit a Hilux and can be relied on to provide the legendary ruggedness, performance, responsiveness, and safety expected of it.

Chief changes done to this all-new model include a chassis with enlarged side rail cross-sections for improved comfort, ruggedness, and safety. It also has an upgraded rear leaf spring suspension and shock absorbers for enhanced off-road performance and comfort. And as a global model, it’s available with three suspension specifications: Standard (for all road conditions), Heavy Duty (for heavy loads), and Comfort (for driving mainly on paved roads).

Mated to the strengthened chassis is Toyota’s new 1GD turbo diesel engine. The maximum output is pegged at 177 horsepower at 3,400 rpm and 450 Nm at 1,600 to 2,400 rpm—both improving on the current model’s outputs. More than just raw power, the new 1GD engine provides excellent torque at all rev ranges, reduced engine noise, and better fuel efficiency. It’s mated to a new 6-speed manual transmission with optimized gear ratios. All in all, Toyota says it’s 10 percent more fuel efficient than the outgoing 3.0-liter D-4D motor. A six-speed automatic is also available.

Lower-end variants also benefit from another all-new engine, the 2GD turbo diesel engine. With a displacement of 2.4-liters, it generates 147 horsepower at 3,400 rpm and 400 Nm from 1,600 to 2,000 rpm. This engine is mated to either a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission.

All models get a larger, 80-liter fuel tank.

Outside, the all-new Hilux takes on the new Toyota family look. It’s closer now to say, the Corolla Altis with its integrated grille and LED headlamps. Of course, this is contrasted by the sturdier looking bumper section. At the side, the squared-off wheel arches communicate strength and dynamism. It’s 70-mm longer and 20-mm wider with a slightly lower roofline.

Inside, the Hilux’s occupant-centric engineering is shown thanks to a more uniformed design filled with metallic decoration for a premium and refined appearance. Improved packaging also means that there’s more head and front shoulder room while rear occupants have 35-mm more knee room. The front thrones offer more adjustment options. Like other new-generation pickup trucks, the 2015 Hilux gains car-like features such as a keyless smart entry and exit system, automatic climate control, cruise control, and a multi-information display. The main focal point though is the new cutting-edge audio system with a touchscreen display and multi-touch gesture control.

The name Hilux comes from the combination of “High” and “Luxury” an apt description for the all-new, eighth-generation model. The all-new 2015 Hilux is expected to enter the Philippine market around the second to third quarter of this year.

  2. NP300, Strada & now Hilux is coming & say that NP300 has better looking exterior but not refined engine same with the aged Strada 4D56. Hopefully Toyota wont let down the fanboys with these 2 new mills, forget the D4Dead woes.
Currently on test drives the Ranger is better than NP300 & Strada.

    1. Well, it does have a larger interior than the previous Hilux. However, Toyota didn't release much of the tech specs such as ground clearance, interior room, etc. etc. Once we get more info, we'll post it right here!

  4. For me, this bare looking beast looks so ugly. Maybe after a few facelifts and nose job, it will be better looking. Toyota has a good engine and low maintenance cost. navara has the looks and the suspension. Strada has the backseat comfort and easiest parking in the malls. Size matters, the wider you go... the more scratches you get in the city. Ranger trumps in the off road section but ford is never as reliable as the others.

    1. Low maint. cost for a Toyota belt drive engine? Compare to the latest Navara timing chain drive & 10k km. interval oil change though noisy clattered engine.
Toyota always brag their low-down torque--1600-2400 rpm but neither help in fuel economy nor in actual drive same with Ford. Dmax less HP equal fuel save.

    2. Not ugly as the new Strada front, The current Hilux looks better.

  6. casa change oil comparison between toyota 2.5 d4d vs isuzu 4ja1-t. The isuzu always billed us 2 to 3 times more. Both using mineral oil. A friend also happened to own a hilux and a frontier. He recommended me to wait for the new hilux. Mahal daw maintenance sa nissan. These are the facts. Sa hyundai, lolokohin ka pa ng service attendant. Naku sir, hindi pwede ordinary mineral oil. Dapat fully synthetic lang ang gamit namin. Well, I don't know...

  7. In designing pick ups, which is mostly sought after by guys not women, car makers should not make it too stylish lest it will look feminine. The eyes (headlights) says it all.
I'm not liking those headlights. It's doesn't work with the masculine setup this truck is trying to convey. It's too sexy for for it. The truck looks like a girl gym rat on steroids. Toyota should seriously do a redesign shortly on those eyes.

    2. Nope. The new montero will probably share the same ugly front with the strada.

  11. By the time Toyota releases the Hi-Lux most of the prospective buyers would have already bought their competition. It pays to start early in a race that is so competitive and comparable with each other.
