UPDATED: 2016 Toyota Fortuner: This is It! (w/ Thailand Market Specs)

UPDATE 4: Now, they have revealed the full specs (2/29).

UPDATE 3: Toyota Motor Philippines launches it to the media (1/14).

UPDATE 2: More information about the suspension, more interior pictures (7/17).

UPDATE 1: Now includes the Thai-market specs (7/16).

Toyota Motor Corporation held simultaneous launches of its much-awaited, all-new 2016 Fortuner in both Thailand and Australia just a couple of hours ago. Sales in those markets start as early as October of this year with the Philippines slated for a February 2016 launch (as indicated by Toyota sources).

The Fortuner has continued to be a very strong seller for Toyota even it traces its roots way back in 2006. However, the Japanese brand isn’t taking any chances and has put a whole new set of engines under the Fortuner’s hood. This is led by a new 1GD 2.8-liter diesel engine with 177 horsepower at 3,400 rpm and 450 Nm of torque at 1,600 to 2,400 rpm. This torque figure goes down to 420 Nm at 1,400 to 2,600 rpm when paired with the manual gearbox. This engine is joined by a smaller diesel engine, a 2.4-liter 2GD with 150 horsepower and 343 Nm of torque. The 2.7-liter VVT-i engine will still be offered and will carry on unchanged has been updated with a Dual VVT-i system.

All engines come with a choice of either a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic gearbox, although the 4WD model only comes with an automatic gearbox. The 6-speed automatic even comes with a paddle shift.

Designed all new from the ground up, the 2016 Fortuner features a heavily revised chassis with a Double Wishbone / Four-Link coil spring suspension (Update: apparently, Australian models have a Five-Link coil spring suspension) that promises a much plusher ride without compromising on loading and payload performance. In fact, Toyota says it can still tow some 3,000 kilograms (2,800 for the automatic). It also receives the added security of four-wheel disc brakes as well (at least for Australia, Thailand models continue with rear drum brakes). Ride height varies per market with Australia actually receiving a 225-mm ground clearance.

For the 4WD variant, the Fortuner removes the full-time 4WD in favor of a part-time unit. It now has a mechanical rear differential lock along with Toyota’s A-TRAC or Active Traction Control System that allows the driver of either taking electronic assistance or engaging the diff lock himself.

Outside, the all-new Fortuner features a sleeker appearance that’s pretty removed from the Hilux on which it’s based on. In terms of dimensions, it measures up at 4,795x1,855x1,835 (LxWxH, in millimeters). Some models receive such spiffy exterior details like LED daytime running lights, bi-LED headlights and tail lights, a powered tailgate, and a shark’s fin antenna. All Fortuner models ride on standard 17-inch alloy wheels with higher variants going up to 18-inches (Thailand has all models running on 18-inch wheels).

Inside, the Fortuner is now more luxurious than ever before with a long list of comfort and safety features. Like its exterior, the interior is also far removed from the Hilux and features leather stitching on the dashboard, available brown leather seats, and matte wood paneling. It now gets a proximity key entry system with push button engine start/stop, up to 7 airbags, a climate control with rear air conditioning, a multi-information display nestled in the gauge cluster, a new touchscreen infotainment system, anti-lock brakes with EBD and brake assist, traction control and stability control, hill start assist, and a reverse camera system. All in all, Toyota believes the all-new Fortuner will achieve top safety ratings (Five-Star ASEAN NCAP).

Coinciding with the launch, Toyota has announced that it’s starting to develop a wide range of genuine accessories for the Fortuner including bullbars that are compatible with the car’s safety systems.

  1. Wow!!! With all the enhancements and upgrades, what could be the impact on the pricing? Hopefully, it will still be competitively priced versus the Everest.

  3. Exterior and Interior design looks very well executed. Ruggedly handsome with a high-end touch. Can't wait to see if the actual engine performance and overall ride quality matches the looks. If all turns out well and the pricing is within range of the previous Fortuner model pricing this could be a big winner... hopefully the all new Innova will follow the same design and come out soon...

Exciting times for the local Philippine midsize SUV market... with the all new Montero ... all new Everest ... all new Trailblazer just inches away from official local launching and possibly more all new models from Hyundai, Kia and others... this will all be good for the consumer ... hopefully the competitive midsize SUV market will eventually push prices down ... at the end the model that offers the best balance of price-performance-design wins...

Macho lang sya sa labas... pero... mas importante pa rin ang riding comfort in the end. The four link coil spring is a mess, its performance is worst than leaf springs of other toyotas.

Tuwang-tuwa yung mga unggoy sa Bottom Gear PH, as if naman our narrow roads & tiny parking slots can accommodate these unwieldy things, da-dalawa lang naman tao sa loob most of the time. Nope, for Philippine roads, subcompact SUVs and CUVs should be the norm. Anything more is just selfish showing-off.

    2. That's a good choice if you're after cabin space & riding comfort. Understandably, many people choose a high-riding vehicle due to the bad roads, floods and increased visibility, so for the same price as a midsize sedan, a crossover or compact SUV makes the most sense. Anything bigger is just a waste of space.

LCV engine to, so engine life ang prime consideration and not high peak dyno figures. This new engine is also supposedly a big improvement in efficiency over the prior one, thanks to reduced thermal losses and an accessible powerband (lots of available torque at very low rpms, courtesy of a very low boost threshold).

      Delete
All thhis just means they attached a smaller turbo so it would spool up faster, there would be less turbo lag, peak torque would occur earlier, at the expense of higher-end torque & HP. In short, it's a tweaked engine attached to a new 6-speed tranny, nothing more. They couldn't even say if its Euro-4 compliant, if it was they would be bragging about it now.

Accept it, this is literally an Innova with a different bodyshell.

    3. AnonymousJuly 18, 2015 at 8:26 PM - Hey dum dum, not all countries are EURO 4 yet. guess what happens when you put in a non-EURO 4 diesel into a EURO 4 engine?

Tweaking the engine is not a bad thing. Its always a trade-off when you're working on limited resources. Get it dum dum?

Lastly, saying that this is an innova in a different bodyshell is just pure BS. Did you know a PRADO has the same engine a the 3.0 Fortuner. In that case, I can claim that a PRADO is just a Fortuner in a different bodyshell. Doesn't make sense right dum dum?

    4. Daming mali nung gunggong sa taas ^^^ haha.

      - by PH law, ALL vehicles need to be Euro-4 compliant by Jan.1 2016. So you're the dumb4ss if you buy a vehicle that would be violating Phil. environmental laws in a few months time.

      - so this tweaked engine is, by your admission, already obsolete and under-spec'ed even before official sales begin :P

      - this IS literally an Innova with a diff. bodyshell, haven't you heard of Toyota's IMV program? Kawawa ka naman, buying a vehicle without researching its background.

      - sure, the previous-gen Prado, not the current one, had the same diesel engine, but the gasoline engine is waay superior to the one used on this AUV, not to mention the also superior transmission, 4WD system, suspension, interior, standard features, etc. I guess you haven't driven nor rode in a Prado ever so you never knew the huge differences. So no, sorry, you're dead wrong. This AUV has plenty more in common with its sister vehicle Innova than a Prado. It's like saying a Vios is the same as the 86 since both have 4 wheels. Lolz. Please try harder next time turd-world AUV fanb0i. Thanks for playing.

"Daming mali nung gunggong sa taas ^^^ haha."

      - by PH law, its not illegal to own a non-euro4 compliant vehicle. It is illegal to sell non-euro4 fuel. Kindly get your facts straight! Bakit mo naman iisipin na bawal bumili or mag own ng non-euro4 come 2016??? edi almost all vehicle owners in the Philippines will be criminals! common sense is not so common now..

      - by admission this engine is obsolete? when and where exactly did I admit that? am I in the position to even do that?!?! My point is that Toyota is known for its dependability and they do that partly by under-tuning their engines.

      - seriously you'll insist that a fortuner is an innova in a diff bodyshell? come on and get some sense into your head! the IMV platform has 3 distinct vehicles in it. keyword, DISTINCT. the hilux for utility use - panghakot. the fortuner is for those who need offroad capability but still be able to carry a lot of people. the innova is clearly, for city folks that have a need to move a lot of people. there are a lot of differences between an innova and fortuner. 1. engine - even if they have the same code, the power output is different. 2. Suspension - the innova is designed for tarmac use while the fortuner with stiffer suspension can handle a bit of off-road. 3. design - the fortuner is more aggressive as compared to the innova which is a bit bland. 4. many more - go check the specs!

      - saying someone is dead wrong is not a sound arguement to prove someone is wrong. that is a fact. also, i did not claim that the prado is a fortuner in a different bodyshell. my point is if you claim that the innova is a fotuner in a diff body shell, then anyone can claim that the fortuner is a prado in a diff bodyshell. I recognize the differences you listed between the prado and fortuner. now why can't you recognize the differences between the innova and fortuner.

      - I don't see the value in speculating that I have never ridden a Prado other than underhandedly undermining my arguement. For your benefit, please know that I have ridden a prado and I RECOGNIZE the differences between it and a fortuner. I'll quote you "It's like saying a Vios is the same as the 86 since both have 4 wheels" = that is exactly your logic in saying that fortuner = innova. in your own words, "thank you for playing"

look at that^^ I look like a jackass right? musta kanaman? you know what sucks about you is that youre filipino. you have no right to brag about other shit with you're own people you cunt. the old fortuner is fine and it sells really well in all markets. I dont see any reason for you to boast about crap muka ka lang gago. lol and if you start talking shit to me know that I'm half filipino. I dont know why but when I see filipinos like you I feel like everybody in the philippines are duechebags kasi ganyan din sa probinsya namin mahirap na nga pagalingan pa. kawawang tingnan tuloy. well bruh. ganito nalang in all honestly cars are shit here pero not with the products ha ganda nga ng fortuner and monteros eh eveything has a purpose yung ayaw ko lang talaga ay ang safety features. kasi I need to pay more to have safety features it should be like the US kasi kahit base models meron nang ABS+EBD+stability control. dun nga kahit tire pressure sensors required standard. I hate it lang. another thing is price. in my home country sa saudi putang ina ang rav4 mas mura sa fortuner natin and LOOK SAME SPECS PA. ganito the price of a fortuner in saudi is almost half the price here. pero look we get more options there bigger engine and stuff. and its still cheaper. yung problema talaga dito sa pinas ay ang putek na tax. lahat may tax na pero saan na pu punta? XD anyway the reason na mas mahal dito ang cars ay 100% ang tax with cars from imports. pero ito ang ini isip ko ahh ASEAN LAWS pag parte ka ng asean region I think dapat wala nang tax?? I think lang ahh. anyway lahat naman dito corrupt eh kaya walang assenso lahat from top to bottom. gusto mong maayos yan mag lagay ka ng death penalty. para matakot ang mga corrupt

    1. I really don't see how calling a vehicle 3rd world is negative. If a vehicle is designed for a 3rd world country, then I would interpret that as robust, easy to maintain and will last me many many years. Yes it will not have the bells and whistles of luxury SUVs but if it can bring me from point A to B with no issues, be able to wade through monsoon floods, give me a bit of off road capability, plenty of space, guarantee that there will be lots of parts, etc, them what is the fuss all about?

If you are looking for a 1st world SUV, then why they heck are you in this page? go look at the LC, Prado, Explorer, CX9, Land Rover etc.

The post above is confusing the $h1t out of me.

First, how can he call it an "old piece of shit". I'd rather that he call it a "new piece of shit".

Second, when this guy said to save up for Patrol, LC, Explorer etc, that gave me the impression that there is a price difference between his cream of the crop list and the 3rd world SUVs which is actually a fact - there is a big price difference between a Fortuner and an LC or a Prado. Given that, then why the h3ll is he claiming that people are being tricked to buy these SUVs - you get what you pay for right so nobody is really being tricked. Moreover, sub standard to what? Given that a fortuner is cheaper than a Prado and LC, I would expect that the quality and value I get from the Fortuner will be sub-standard to a Prado and LC.

    2. ^And some love Toyotas... whatever negative comments come out of here, they will still buy a Toyota... because it has "high re-sale value" and the second-hand market can still afford them thinking the third-hand and fouth-hand markets still appreciate a Toyota!...

      Delete
    3. Resale value so you can sell it later when you get bored with it or another vehicle catches your fancy. thinking about the resale value doesn't mean you can't afford to buy one. not worried, you're just considering if you can still get something from it when you have the itch to get something new. so yes, the fact that you know what you might sell it later and know that you won't hold on to it until its last breath, it does not contradict that you can afford to buy it.

anyhow, I think resale is still a factor in buying a car. of course its not the only factor. marami pang iba.

if it makes you happy, then fine, mayabang ako!

Gumiginhawa buhay mo diba? Pogi din naman diba? Yun yon e.

  31. I wonder if the third row folds flat into the floor, or to the sides on hooks like the current model.

Also, I hope the third row seating position has been improved, and the floor in that section lowered so as not to cause that knees-to-the-chin feeling.

    1. I checked. Sadly the Thai models have a side facing third row. It still hooks to the sides. That's from a photo sent by a friend based in Thailand so it's confirmed.

    2. that's the problem with some suv, nasaan ang engineering skill nila for this kind of space. dati nang may vehicle na lumulubog ang 3rd row like town&country, ginaya na rin sya ng ibang manufacturer, pero itong fortuner, old style pa rin, parang mitsubishi adventure. buti pa ang trailblazer, pag ibinaba ang 3rd row at 2nd row, boom ang space ng cargo. it seems that its very expensive kung puro electronics ang improvement and rides, to think na mostly ng pinoy ay space ang tinitingnan. pang multi-purpose ika nga.

      Delete
    3. So in Thailand, the third row is like the Crosswind? Jump seats?

      Delete
    4. AUV-style pati 3rd-row seats, lolz.

      Delete
    5. That's a shocker, side facing 3rd row. They should think twice using that here. Side-folding is bad enough they should have improved on this already, since it took them awhile to come up with this latest version. All the competition have already adopted the fold flat seats. Let me guess, the spare tire mechanism is still the same as the old, which require rods to be inserted in a hole to latch onto the spare, very tricky to use vs the Montero's easy knob turning.
If this is the case, it's a big FAIL for Toyota. It will be an expensive
      but cheaply made AUV

    6. That's Toyota for you. Just look at the Vios, outdated 4-speed auto transmission pa din. And the Altis 2.0L? Overpriced at 1.2M without a touchscreen or a rear view camera.

  32. With the new ford everest, the new toyota Fortuner and the coming new mitsubishi montero, it will be a great battle in the Midsize SUV category. However, ang hirap magdecide at bumili nito pag release nito sa market in the philippines...wala pa makapagsabi kung may loss of power ba? Umaandar ba kahit wala pa ang driver?maganda ba talaga suspension?hindi ba humhina ang aircon or umuulan ba sa loob.? 800mm ba talaga ang wading depth capability or kailangan mo ng diving suit sa loob? Gumagana ba safety features as advertised like (abs, ESC, traction control) which will affect the resale value in the future. Because I think sa market as far as I know, 3 pa lang sa existing new entry sa category ang talagang tested with honest, having both positive and negative review frome legit buyers and owners because they have been in the market for 3 or more years already: hyundai Santa Fe, Chevrolet Trailblazer and the Isuzu MUX. The new comers for this year are Impressing us in pictures and papers from their manufacturer as part of marketing strategy.I know they have proven their previous car kaya may kanya kanya supporters na. Kahit may lemon law na talo ka pa rin sa abala pagnagkataon..As of now I think it is wise to choose between those 3 tested new SUV or the old proven models of everest, fortuner and montero or better wait until someone can give us honest and transparent review on this paper impressive new comers so they can join the real battle for the King of the hills.kaya its not yet the time para pagtalunan kung sino ang mas maganda sa 2015-2016 new comers, kasi even their good names, dazzling picture, price and even re-sale value will not matter anymore kung bugok ang itlog nila.

Like everest. Same specs dinala dito.
