Toyota Motor Corporation held simultaneous launches of its much-awaited, all-new 2016 Fortuner in both Thailand and Australia just a couple of hours ago. Sales in those markets start as early as October of this year with the Philippines slated for a February 2016 launch (as indicated by Toyota sources).
The Fortuner has continued to be a very strong seller for Toyota even it traces its roots way back in 2006. However, the Japanese brand isn’t taking any chances and has put a whole new set of engines under the Fortuner’s hood. This is led by a new 1GD 2.8-liter diesel engine with 177 horsepower at 3,400 rpm and 450 Nm of torque at 1,600 to 2,400 rpm. This torque figure goes down to 420 Nm at 1,400 to 2,600 rpm when paired with the manual gearbox. This engine is joined by a smaller diesel engine, a 2.4-liter 2GD with 150 horsepower and 343 Nm of torque. The 2.7-liter VVT-i engine will still be offered and
All engines come with a choice of either a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic gearbox, although the 4WD model only comes with an automatic gearbox. The 6-speed automatic even comes with a paddle shift.
Designed all new from the ground up, the 2016 Fortuner features a heavily revised chassis with a Double Wishbone / Four-Link coil spring suspension (Update: apparently, Australian models have a Five-Link coil spring suspension) that promises a much plusher ride without compromising on loading and payload performance. In fact, Toyota says it can still tow some 3,000 kilograms (2,800 for the automatic). It also receives the added security of four-wheel disc brakes as well (at least for Australia, Thailand models continue with rear drum brakes). Ride height varies per market with Australia actually receiving a 225-mm ground clearance.
For the 4WD variant, the Fortuner removes the full-time 4WD in favor of a part-time unit. It now has a mechanical rear differential lock along with Toyota’s A-TRAC or Active Traction Control System that allows the driver of either taking electronic assistance or engaging the diff lock himself.
Outside, the all-new Fortuner features a sleeker appearance that’s pretty removed from the Hilux on which it’s based on. In terms of dimensions, it measures up at 4,795x1,855x1,835 (LxWxH, in millimeters). Some models receive such spiffy exterior details like LED daytime running lights, bi-LED headlights and tail lights, a powered tailgate, and a shark’s fin antenna. All Fortuner models ride on standard 17-inch alloy wheels with higher variants going up to 18-inches (Thailand has all models running on 18-inch wheels).
Inside, the Fortuner is now more luxurious than ever before with a long list of comfort and safety features. Like its exterior, the interior is also far removed from the Hilux and features leather stitching on the dashboard, available brown leather seats, and matte wood paneling. It now gets a proximity key entry system with push button engine start/stop, up to 7 airbags, a climate control with rear air conditioning, a multi-information display nestled in the gauge cluster, a new touchscreen infotainment system, anti-lock brakes with EBD and brake assist, traction control and stability control, hill start assist, and a reverse camera system. All in all, Toyota believes the all-new Fortuner will achieve top safety ratings (Five-Star ASEAN NCAP).
Coinciding with the launch, Toyota has announced that it’s starting to develop a wide range of genuine accessories for the Fortuner including bullbars that are compatible with the car’s safety systems.
Wow!!! With all the enhancements and upgrades, what could be the impact on the pricing? Hopefully, it will still be competitively priced versus the Everest.

ReplyDeleteThe fortuner has a very bad ride. I feel like vomiting after riding in our 2013 fortuner for 30minutes. Every bump on the road can be felt inside the cabin. Macho lang sya sa labas... pero... mas importante pa rin ang riding comfort in the end. The four link coil spring is a mess, its performance is worst than leaf springs of other toyotas.

ReplyDeleteHindi lahat nadadaan sa peak output. Magkaiba ang automotive diesel sa commercial diesel engines. LCV engine to, so engine life ang prime consideration and not high peak dyno figures. This new engine is also supposedly a big improvement in efficiency over the prior one, thanks to reduced thermal losses and an accessible powerband (lots of available torque at very low rpms, courtesy of a very low boost threshold).

All thhis just means they attached a smaller turbo so it would spool up faster, there would be less turbo lag, peak torque would occur earlier, at the expense of higher-end torque & HP. In short, it's a tweaked engine attached to a new 6-speed tranny, nothing more. They couldn't even say if its Euro-4 compliant, if it was they would be bragging about it now.

If a vehicle is designed for a 3rd world country, then I would interpret that as robust, easy to maintain and will last me many many years. Yes it will not have the bells and whistles of luxury SUVs but if it can bring me from point A to B with no issues, be able to wade through monsoon floods, give me a bit of off road capability, plenty of space, guarantee that there will be lots of parts, etc, them what is the fuss all about?

That's the odd part actually. The Press Releases all indicate an unchanged VVTi engine, but the spec sheet (which I made myself) does indicate Dual VVTi as you said.

Second, when this guy said to save up for Patrol, LC, Explorer etc, that gave me the impression that there is a price difference between his cream of the crop list and the 3rd world SUVs which is actually a fact - there is a big price difference between a Fortuner and an LC or a Prado. Given that, then why the h3ll is he claiming that people are being tricked to buy these SUVs - you get what you pay for right so nobody is really being tricked. Moreover, sub standard to what? Given that a fortuner is cheaper than a Prado and LC, I would expect that the quality and value I get from the Fortuner will be sub-standard to a Prado and LC.

I checked. Sadly the Thai models have a side facing third row. It still hooks to the sides. That's from a photo sent by a friend based in Thailand so it's confirmed.

Side-folding is bad enough they should have improved on this already, since it took them awhile to come up with this latest version. All the competition have already adopted the fold flat seats. Let me guess, the spare tire mechanism is still the same as the old, which require rods to be inserted in a hole to latch onto the spare, very tricky to use vs the Montero's easy knob turning.

Umaandar ba kahit wala pa ang driver?maganda ba talaga suspension?hindi ba humhina ang aircon or umuulan ba sa loob.? 800mm ba talaga ang wading depth capability or kailangan mo ng diving suit sa loob? Gumagana ba safety features as advertised like (abs, ESC, traction control) which will affect the resale value in the future. Because I think sa market as far as I know, 3 pa lang sa existing new entry sa category ang talagang tested with honest,having both positive and negative review frome legit buyers and owners because they have been in the market for 3 or more years already: hyundai Santa Fe, Chevrolet Trailblazer and the Isuzu MUX. The new comers for this year are Impressing us in pictures and papers from their manufacturer as part of marketing strategy.I know they have proven their previous car kaya may kanya kanya supporters na. Pero hirap maging EGG tester..Kahit galing pa yan sa eagles farm, pwede maging chicken yan or worse bugok pa. ReplyDeleteHindi lang yun, it has poor maneuverability in traffic and parking lots, compounded by a very low steering ratio which is common among pickup-based SUVs (4+ turns lock-to-lock), and it is also rollover prone. Tignan niyo na lang yung mga nahuhulog sa Skyway, it's either a Montero or a Fortuner or its pickup variants, Strada and Hilux. Akala kasi ng mga driver ng mga ito sports car dala nila kaya kung mag-maneho parang mga unggoy... Ayun, sa baba ng Skyway ang bagsak...

I owned fortuner 2010 VVTi 2.7 liter engine, i like the performance but minus on the luggage space especially on how you fold the 3rd row seat, just like an Innova. Is the new foturner change it on how it fold? try to compare the 3rd row seat of Montero, Everest, Trailblazer, you can maximize the whole luggage space.

ReplyDeleteI did saw a new silver Fortuner driven by 2 guys in T-shirt weaving recklessly left and right for 3 lanes, northbound along C5 between Taguig and Pasig between 6:30am and 6:50am on a weekday. At one instance, they would just floor the accelerator which gives out a sudden visible puff of black smoke. I guess these are not the real owners and just enjoying the wild ride/test drive/or delivery to the casa. Too bad for the would-be buyer of this vehicle.
