“Car of the Year” is an honor not bestowed on just any car. It takes something quite special to elevate a car from being just “good” to being “extraordinary”. See, it’s actually hard to find a bad car nowadays. Sure, there are some cars that are better than others, but for the most part, any modern automobile is better than anything being cranked out five years ago. Such is the playing field the Mazda2 had to overcome to win not just one, but two car of the year trophies—one in Japan and, more importantly, here in the Philippines. The question is: does it deserve the title?
Oh, you bet.
The magic formula starts out with the looks. Though there’s a strong resemblance to other current Mazda vehicles, it’s not simply a case of design cut-and-paste. Given the smaller footprint designers had to work with, they exaggerated the entire KODO theme on the 2 without making it look like a bad caricature. The resulting sub-compact is taut and muscular with well-defined lines and nice proportions. It doesn’t play on the long hood, cab rearward design as seen on larger Mazda vehicles that the hatchback edges the sedan in terms of aesthetics. That’s not to say the sedan’s ugly though. It’s also nice, but the proportions just work better on the five-door. The Speed variant, exclusive on the five-door, adds some look faster parts like front and rear chins, a roof spoiler, and red detailing. It works most of the time with the only offending part being the red detailing which looks too ricer.
The Mazda2’s strong DNA continues inside where it has the same driver-focused interior. Apart from the sharply raked roofline that causes you to hit your head getting in and out some times, there’s little else to complain about. The driving position is naturally ergonomic and perfectly positioned with all the driving controls where you expect them. Mazda engineers, in particular, have made a big fuss about the pedals, placing them naturally towards the body’s central line (unlike other sub-compacts where they’re slightly offset) and this contributes greatly to making the 2 feels like a properly engineered car. It also alleviates fatigue and stress, especially on longer drives.
Fit and finish is still pretty good, but they’re not in the same league as the 6 or even the 3. On the V model tested, the A-pillar trim was already popping out and no amount of pushing would get it back in. It wasn’t contributing to any rattles or squeaks (the interior is pretty solid in that regard), but it was more of a visual annoyance. In addition, though the V models feel well-equipped already, the higher trim R and Speed models feel more special thanks to the unique instrument cluster, heads-up display, Mazda Connect infotainment system, and the off-white leather seats. The last bit is certainly concerning especially those wanting to keep their seats free from dirt, so Mazda might have just answered your prayers with the new Midnight Edition which swaps them for black cow hide.
For those who’re familiar with the new Skyactiv generation of vehicles, they’ll know that interior space isn’t exactly a strong suit and the same adjective applies to the Mazda2 as well. The driver and front passenger won’t know the difference since the front thrones are easily the best in its class, but those in the back will experience knee brushing against the front seatbacks. And the person sitting in the middle won’t exactly find riding on the “bump” to be a comfortable experience. Luggage is quite average whether it’s the hatchback or sedan, and swallowing two suitcases side-by-side is possible; however, there aren’t much storage spaces to speak of. Variants without the Mazda Connect system gain a space for their wallet/toll card/iPhone where the controller usually resides.
While the Mazda2 isn’t exactly the most practical sub-compact out there, it does stand out above the rest with just how fun it is on the road. Now, normally small cars and fun-to-drive aren’t muttered in the same breath, but Mazda does weave its magic beautifully here.
There’s only one powertrain across the entire range and that’s the 1.5-liter Skyactiv-G engine producing 108 horsepower and 139 Nm of torque. The paper figures aren’t really extraordinary, but how it’s tweaked and tuned to match the six-speed automatic that grabs the headlines. Unlike other sub-compacts which tend to fake a sense of power thanks to a sensitive throttle, the Mazda2 features a more linear delivery. This means it’s far easier to drive because it doesn’t surge needlessly when you don’t want it to. Fuel consumption is limited to just 8.62 km/L, but that’s because the average speed didn’t push up beyond 13 km/h.
On the open road, drivers can enjoy extra oomph thanks to a toggle switch located just below the shifter. Labeled, “Sport”, it increases the throttle sensitivity and keeps the revs up. This makes the Mazda2 different from all other sub-compacts in that it makes overtaking entertaining. The engine note may not be memorable, but at least the rev happy nature makes it a great companion to drives up to places like Baguio.
Apart from the powertrain, the chassis tuning is equally stellar. It drives like a bigger car not because it lacks agility or maneuverability (the proportions and driving position easily make it one of the sweetest cars to drive in traffic), but in that it doesn’t compromise long distance comfort or high speed stability. The steering, for instance, gives a predictable motion that removes the need to seesaw the wheel especially during hard cornering. There may be some degree of understeer, but nothing that’ll cause drivers to complain. Next, the suspension is firm, but is able to absorb potholes and road cracks with ease even with the tire pressure pumped up to the recommended 36 PSI! And even the brakes are a part of the class act offering excellent modulation with a solid pedal feel and confident stopping power.
The Mazda2 isn’t for everyone. If you’re keen on driving a car with zero personality, then you won’t enjoy it. Mazda has engineered the 2 to feel like the 3 or the 6—and that’s evident in all of the touch points from the aesthetics to the on-road feel and dynamics. In other words, this is a driver’s sub-compact in the same way the Mazda3 is a driver’s compact. It may not be as roomy as the competition, but that’s not the reason why you’ll fall in love with it. It’s great because it rewards the driver for actually choosing a car that’s heart above the mind. If you consider driving fun to be the priority in your sub-compact, then the Mazda2 makes for a really solid argument. Car of the year? The Mazda2 rests its case.

I've waited a long time for this. I'm definitely leaner towards buying the Mazda 2 Speed over the Mazda 3 V. Every other subcompact car feels blah compared to the Mazda 2.

ReplyDeleteThere's a discernible difference in fit and finish. The Mazda3 uses more soft-touch materials and all the panels fit better. There are more hard surfaces in the Mazda2.

DeleteThe Mazda 3, whether the 1.5 or 2.0L variant, is CBU Made in Japan. The Mazda 2 is Made in Thailand. SO the build quality, fit&finish, quality of materials used is still superior in the Mz3 compared to the Mz2. You can see for yourself by spending time inside both.

the phablet like center console is a magnet to car thieves. A lot of complaints in other forums, idiots braking through window glass and force pulling the center display thinking it's a phablet. Other than that, it's a nice car to have and to hold.

DeleteThe hud(heads up display) was placed there so that you would not look down on the speedometer to check your speed, therefore, your eyes(or at least part of your vision) is still on the road. About thieves trying to steal the touchscreen, park in safe areas(though it really can't be avoided sometimes). Nice is too bland to describe Mazda. This is the best car in the segment of affordable subcompact cars.
Deletethat's precisely the point. You have to keep your eyes on the road - and the HUD somehow distracts your vision keeping your eyes focused on the road. I think the huge center speedo is more than and big enough already to keep you informed of your speed. then again it's only on the R variant. The V variant doesnt have one and is the more sensible variant to have in my opinion...
DeleteIve only drive my M2Speed for 2weeks but I dont find the HUD distracting at all. In fact, i find it too low on the dash and it has me glancing Down instead of just peeking into my peripheral vision as it should. But then again, i have a long torso for my height so my head is a bit higher than most. I just lower the height-adjustable seat to suit. If you find it annoying, simply jack your sear up so your peeking over it rather tha. Thru it.

DeleteI wonder why people still buy the Toyota Vios over the Mazda 2 S(lowest variant). They're at a similar price and the Mazda 2 has a 1.5L engine(108hp) vs the Vios 1.3L engine(85hp), and a 6 speed automatic, compared to the Vios' ancient 4 speed automatic.The Mazda also has 3 years free PMS. The only advantage of the Vios is a bit more space, parts availability, and reliability kuno. The Vios also feels dead, while the Mazda feels so alive when you drive it.
ReplyDeleteWonder no more, you already answered it. Not everyone can afford to have 2 or more vehicles for each purpose so they tend to be practical, purchasing a car that would fit most of their transportation needs with minimal fuss. It's a motoring appliance, the Mazda2 isn't.
DeleteAs what he said, the Mazda 2 S and Vios E are priced around 778k to 795k, for the 17k difference, you'll get a more gorgeous exterior/interior, a 1.5L engine rated at 108hp than the 1.3L rated at 85hp, a six speed automatic over a 4 speed automatic, and 3 years PMS(Preventive maintenance, parts, change oil, labor). The yojin package alone is worth a lot more than the 17k difference. I'm sick and tired of seeing Vioses on the road, knowing that there are better options out there.

personally i was going to buy a vios originally but after doing some research decided to go with the mazda2.
I can answer this. My wife's Vios clocked in 264,000 kms as of yesterday. Still pulls the same, still at 18-19 kms/Li. Only replaced the clutch disc and plate and a pair of tie rods after all that time (plus usual maintenance parts like fluids, battery, and tires). That quality is not "kuno". Price to specs though, you are right.

ReplyDeleteIt's just niceties and additional tech. The Mazda 2 has the best engine and transmission in the segment, no other subcompact engine comes close. The 1.5L engine of the city on the other hand, is rated at 126hp at 6600rpm, if the Mazda or other brands are rated at 6600rpm, they would increase as well. People are misinformed of the engine power, disregarding the rpm and also the weight. Anyway, I would buy the Honda City if the Mazda 2 doesn't exist.

DeleteThe honda city is more fuel efficient since it is equipped with a cvt and it has the eco mode. It even has a coaching light so you will be guided and nit waste fuel. The mazda2 has no advantage over the transmission and engine since its just 6-speed and its not even direct injection like the one frome the 2.0 mazda3. So yeah, aside from being lighter and has a better suspension for handling, the mazda has no real advantage over the city when it comes to fuel efficiency and power.
I think the city would be popular with lawyers or doctors because it looks sharp and professional while the mazda2 is suited for networkers because of how flashy and cool it looks, surely it will entice more "prospects".
Um, a lot of automotive authors commended Mazda's six speed skyactiv transmission as one of the best transmission available on the market(if not the best). Also, a lot of people don't like cvts, because they have no feel, and feel like a rubber band. There's not much excitement in driving a a cvt. I think the mazda 2 top variant and the city looks great, but the mazda 2 is the best looking car in the segment(the top variant), I would rank the City second.

DeleteThe cvt might be boring but its for fuel efficiency rather than a sporty drive. The city is all about fuel efficiency if you haven't noticed. Reviewers love the 6 speed because it balances fun and fuel efficiency but the cvt is much more fuel efficient but yeah its not great when pushed to the limits. For everyday use, the cvt of honda feels like a regular automatic, doesn't have that rubber band feel and noisy sound that cvt usually produces.

Fuel efficiecy and power, Honda City wins. Looks are subjective, I like the honda cities sharp headlights and the mazda 2's grill. Both are good in aesthetics section.
Contrary to what you just posted, the Mazda2 is also direct injected, although it features a lower compression ratio (12:1) compared to its bigger brothers (13:1). It also has a 4-1 header versus the 4-2-1 in the 3/6/CX-5.

This review says its direct injected but the brochure and the power figures shows that its not. It would be nice if someone can clarify this and can provide basis e.g. a website link.

DeleteAll skyactive engines are direct injected. The 1.5li engine in the M2 is the same as the 1.5li in the M3 - Only it is detuned to a lower HP rating and re calibrated the torque to the lower body weight of the M2. If they dont do this - the Mazda 2 will fly!...(kidding)

ReplyDeletefiesta is turbo. M2 is NA. The fiesta will smoke the M2 anyday in outright speed and torque. No magic for mazda here. Best bet would be a M3 - but they are not in the same segment.

DeleteIn typical everyday performance, meaning in traffic, there are a lot of complaints in Ford's powershift transmission, which is what's in the Fiesta. It seems to be geared for highway use.
Olats yung double-clutch tranny sa Ford, still jerky in stop&go traffic, they haven't completely mitigated it until now. The turbos are peaky & have a non-linear power delivery. But it's a cheap and lazy way to create more power from a smaller-displacement engine, that's why Honda is also copying it now for the new Civic, basically turning their backs on their VTEC, naturally-aspirated philosophy.

DeleteWell the demo unit I had actually had some scuff marks on the leather so I imagine it's not that easy to clean. Of course, if you're obsessive compulsive, you should be fine.
As for interior color, it's for all Speed models which is exclusively for the hatchback.
The Midnight Edition is priced is P 995,000 and arrives in March.
From what the sales agent told me, by default, the leather seats for the soul red speed are black leather but you have the option (only for soul red) to make it white for an additional 16k.

I have watched the crash test videos for Mazda 2, and the car used had side airbags. Does the Speed variant released here have side curtain airbags?
nice review uly. been driving my m2 for 3 months now. absolutely fun to drive. a little cramped in the back but I don't mind since I usually drive alone. the transmission is tops but its the small details that impresses me most like the pedal placement and feel. the accelerator needs a bit of effort to push down so u can actually rest your foot on it. makes u less fatigued esp when driving thru heavy traffic

DeleteI'm lucky to have both a 2016 Mazda 2 Sedan and a Honda City. It is amazing how people can be inaccurate about their perceptions about these 2 cars unless you actually drive and own both. They are very different cars. If you want space, comfort and better cabin tech, you go for the honda. If you care about driving, appreciate a well engineered transmission, suspension, and engine, go for the mazda. Everything else is about the same.

And yes the cvt experience is horrible compared to the skyactive 6 speed.

But I hv to consider my passengers sa likod, not much leg room sa mazda 2, malayo din ang service center nia sa amin, and The Juke makes my heart beat faster, parang sia yung mas crush ko talaga. Now, here is my problem - red or yellow? Yung yellow parang it makes me so happy lookin at it, but am a shy person so I can't handle the attention. So red na lang? Pero ganda talaga nung yellow....��

DeleteI'm surprised that you compared the Mazda 2 to a lame Yaris. Get either the Mazda 2 or Hyundai Accent diesel if you are after fuel efficiency, a mirage would be a nice and cheap alternative as well if you are really keen towards fuel efficiency, or better yet, get a condo instead, you'll save time. Time is more important than money.

Both are fine choices, choose the 3 if you have more money to spend, I chose the 2 R because of financial constraints, but I would have gladly chosen the 3 R if I had the extra cash. Both are fuel efficient anyway. No issue so far on my 2 R, I picked it over the Honda City Vx because I don't plan to sell it ever, well, unless if a new model is launched.

ReplyDeleteVios is a good but lame car, you'll see thousands of them on the road, so your vios doesn't feel special. Speaking of specifications, the Mazda 2 beats the vios(6 speed auto vs 4 speed, 1.3 vs 1.5, better aesthetics, drum vs disc breaks, the Mazda 2 is sold in 1st world countries, more fuel efficient, etc). The Ford ecosport on the other hand, the auto tranny is jerky, it sucks. The ecoboost is not so fuel efficient, full of hard plastics, interior is not so good, American vs Japanese reliability(japs win), etc. Anyway, test drive all 3 cars you'll see the Mazda 2 reigns supreme. It's a no brainer especially if you'll choose the Mazda 2 R or speed, over the ecosport titanium or the Vios G/TRD

If you're pretty much going to drive it alone, both cars are good, but you can't deny the added flexibility of driving a slightly bigger car. That being said, if you're after the high-tech toys, go for the Mazda2.

It depends on your needs. If you want space, get the Jazz. If space is not that important, you'll love the Mazda 2. The only advantage the Jazz has over the Mazda 2 is more interior space. Do not be fooled by the 126hp@6600 rpm of the Jazz and City. If you will push the Mazda 2 to 6600rpm, it would have similar hp and more torque than the latter, but the Mazda will have the advantage here as it is lighter. I would also prefer a6 speed automatic than a CVT.

ReplyDeleteI think the only available variant that is manual is mazda2 S sedan which is priced at 748k which i just bought this july and it doesnt have a tachometer quite odd for a manual and it does not make sense at all for mazda not to put a tach on it.

I was not actually aware that the unit does not come with a tach and just noticed it when i got the vehicle like all papers signed and it has been paid. Deletebought mazda 2R sedan, wala pang 1 month, FC: city driving is 6km per liter, out of toen tagaytay via slex sta rosa or eton, 12km per liter...sunog spark plugs twice bago pa mag 1,000km...dealer blaming petron xtra 91 octane, bakit daw petron gamit ko kaso, shell lang ang recommended nila..wala daw kwenta petron kasi madaming additives, kaya recommendation, ubusin ko daw yung full tank na petron ko, tapos gumamit lang ng shell para di masunog spark plugs and gumanda fc..ayoos t@ngin@ lang dahilan yan..

Was considering getting the Yaris (fond of hatchbacks much) but was persuaded to buy the mazda 2 instead. My question is, is the price diff between the premium series and the 1.5 V really worth it??? It is a bit steep so I was wondering if I should get it or kust settle for the regular variant. Replies would be much appreciated. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteIf you don't need to impress your friends and family or you are low in budget, get the mazda 2 v. But if you are willing to spend more for the awesomeness of the 2 premium series, then get it. You'll fall in love with it everyday.
DeleteNeed your recommendation guys. I drive 20 kilometers to work everyday (40 combined), and my primary choices are either the Mazda 2 and the Hyundai Accent CRDi, both hatch. Which one is better at fuel economy? I like the diesel turbo of the Accent but the interior although spacious looks dated, I like the exterior though and the fact that it is MT but still has steel rims. The Mazda 2 is balanced though and has better package (bluetooth,alloy rims,push start, etc.). I usually drive like a bat out of hell when given space so will the Accent's diesel make that much of a fuel economy difference? And can the Mazda 2 (only in AT) match the Accent's acceleration and speed?
ReplyDeleteIf fuel economy is your primary concern, get the accent diesel. Its more fuel efficient than the mazda 2 and diesel is cheaper. I like the Mazda 2's exterior and interior, they are more modern than the accent. In acceleration, the accent is faster due to it having a turbocharged engine and the diesel gives it a lot of lowdown torque. That said the accent is a 3 star car with a 5 star engine. Pick the Mazda 2 if you want something more stylish, fun to drive and fuel efficient than most competitors. The accent is also fun to drive as well due to its speed but I don't like the sound of the diesel engine. The Mazda 2 also handles better.

DeleteIt depends on your needs. What variant did you get? If you will load more cargo, get the sedan, if not, opt for the hatchback. Personally, I like the hatch's looks and it is easier to park in the city. The hatch is also more versatile than the sedan. If you fold the rear seats, you can load trollers, baby stuff, etc. Assuming that you and your wife will ride in front.

I'd bet my money on the Honda City. Though I love the Mazda2 for its driving fun and looks, the City is better in terms of being well-rounded. It's much more practical and boasts of better highway fuel economy (perfect for that long drive of yours). Still, you can't go wrong with either car.

Yes, the City is the practical car because it does it marginally better fuel economy and is bigger, so you can fit more friends or family members.
However, the Mazda2 is a more personal choice. I've had readers who chose the Mazda2 because they wanted something different, and they're happy with it overall. And with Yojin-3 as part of the ownership package, you don't have to worry about paying for maintenance for the first 3 years.
Now, let's talk performance. I'd say, they're more or less the same. The City may have more power, but the CVT tends to sap some of that. The Mazda2 uses a conventional 6-speed AT which means better response off the line.
