Honda Cars Philippines Reveals All-New Civic Engines, Variants
Honda Cars Philippines, Inc. has just announced that its authorized dealers across the country are now accepting reservations for the all-new 2016 Civic which will launch very soon. After being shown as a teaser on its Facebook page, HCPI is now revealing more details about their compact car challenger including the powertrain that it will be using.
The tenth-generation model, the 2016 Civic brings Honda back into compact contention with its combination of a premium sporty style and powerful driving performance. The all-new model boasts of a highly aerodynamic design characterized by its low and wide stance, shortened overhangs, and aggressive new front fascia. It’s amplified further with the signature LED headlights with LED daytime running lights and LED tail lights.
Under the hood, the Civic is powered by either a 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine or a first for the Civic range, a 1.5-liter turbocharged motor. The new Earth Dreams turbocharged engine boasts of a maximum output of 172 horsepower and 220 Nm of torque for high cruising efficiency and robust performance. Also new to the Civic is the adoption of Honda’s Earth Dreams CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission).
Harking back to the Civic’s sporty heritage, HCPI announces that the Civic is the second model after the Mobilio to be integrated with the RS or Road Sailing design package. This will undoubtedly add even character and aggressiveness to the Civic’s design.
Already winning the 2016 North American Car of the Year and even the 2016 Canadian Car of the Year, the all-new Civic will be available initially in two variants: the 1.8 E and RS Turbo. It will also have six (6) shades available: Cosmic Blue Metallic, Midnight Burgundy Pearl, Lunar Silver Metallic, White Orchid Pearl, Modern Steel Metallic, and Rallye Red.

DeleteIn the US, the MT version is only available in the lower trim which sports the updated 2.0L engine. The 1.8L engine is not available anymore for the US market. The ASEAN version will keep the old 1.8L engine for its lower trim models.
DeleteI think this is the trend now, no more manuals for dinosaurs like me. The 1.5 liter turbocharged engine would've been perfect with a manual. Very sad.

ReplyDeleteEarly tests show a 7 second 0-60kmh sprint. That's very quick for a compact, even quicker than the current Civic Si 2.4L 205hp. The Focus 1.5L Ecoboost may have the advantage in power & torque but it is heavier by 100kg+ over the Civic. The tests for the Focus states around 8 seconds for a 0-100kmh sprint. Honda kept the weight of the Honda FB (1200-1300 kg) and made the car with a longer wheelbase and wider wheel track.
DeleteWeight, transmission and drivetrain performance is still paramount for quick launches. The new 1.5 turbocharged Civic has been shown to launch as fast and get from 0-60 mph like the 86 (around 7.0 secs). That's very good performance for a cheap car, although I have a feeling Honda Philippines will price the 1.5 turbo Civic way higher than it should be (probably at least 1.4M, which is ridiculous). Would be great at 1.2M. Cheap 7 sec car, although not an FR.
DeleteBase on your comparison, focus is faster with 0-100km/h @8sec vs civic with 0-60km/h @7sec. If you mean 0-60miles/h for civic, then again its not comparable coz the equivalent of 100km/h in miles is 62miles/h.
DeleteI posted the reply dated February 17. It should have been 0-60mph and not 0-60kmh. As per most test worldwide, the new Civic 1.5L turbo is quicker by a second than the Focus 1.5L Ecoboost in either 0-60mph or 0-100kmh sprint.

Go back to High School physics to understand why rear-wheel drive is superior to wrong-wheel drive like this one. Turbocharging is a lazy, cheap way for Honda to keep up with the competition. It's like they turned their back on the very reason why they came up with VTEC in the first place. So I guess the ricers would now stop parroting Honda's mantra that "all-motor" and "naturally-aspirated" is the only true, pure religion. Hypocrites.

ReplyDeleteStill a cheap, compact economy, wrong-wheel drive car. The ricers citing 0-60 times above don't realize that those numbers are for straight-line performance only. Take a RWD sport compact like the 86 and a wrong-wheel drive economy compact like the Civic on a racetrack and the latter would never have a chance, stock for stock. Physics beats fanboyism everytime.
DeleteHuh boss. Why the hate? Owning a car isn't all about the price. It's about being happy when you drive it. I feel safe and stable in the civic as in most Hondas plus this one looks like a Volvo. FYI Im not a fanboy. I drive a 2013 dubai prado and 2016 LC. I also like the 86 but it isnt practical for me - its fun to drive and handles well but you shouldn't down other cars. Bad habit.

DeleteBest in Class how? By copying Ford with small-displacement turbo engines or copying Mazda's SkyActive tech with Earth Dreams kuno Technology??? They ran out of original ideas, so imitation is the name of the game for them now to catch up. If you read up on the history of VTEC development you will laugh at how Honda now turned 180 degrees and basically spat on that philosophy.
DeleteBest in class because they have the best engine (good balance of performance and fuel efficiency) in the segment, a very spacious interior, good reliability, a decent amount of tech equipped (wireless charging, touchscreen, rear camera, electronic parking brake). It looks good too. The only thing that's still unknown is whether it will be priced competitively.

Specs daw? You can easily achieve 170hp from a 2.0L NA engine, nothing beats the smoothness & linear power delivery of an all-motor engine. Sinabi na nga sa taas kung bakit napilitan gumamit ng turbo ang Honda eh, dahil hindi makahabol yung NA VTEC engines nila. Edi lumabas kinain din nila lahat ng marketing propaganda nila starting from the 80s about NA VTEC engines. Any car manufacturer can attach a turbo to their engines, that's not a challenge.

Dito na naman tayo sa irrelevant na topic, their philosophy. So what if they swallowed their pride and made a turbo equipped civic? Ano naman masama doon? Mas ok nga yun eh. At least nag improve sila. Yeah any manufacturer can attach turbo, true. However each manufacturer implements turbo differently. Ford also has a 1.5L turbo engine but its slower than the civic.
Eh hindi ka pa pala naka-drive ng car na may turbo eh, tumahimik ka na, wal ka pa alam. Lahat ng turbo may lag, kahit yung pinaka-maliit na turbine, that's how it works. Basa-basa muna bago mag-assume ng mali. It's true some of it can be masked by clever transmission programming, but not all of it. Everything else being equal, an NA engine would be smoother and would have a more linear power delivery. Want a force-induction engine with no turbo lag??? You should have asked Honda to attach a supercharger to this Civic instead. :P Just learn to get used to the turbine drone noise even at idle, lolz.

DeleteMatches the output? The turbo is faster and theoretically much more fuel efficient than a naturally aspirated 2.0L engine. I think you're forgetting something. The turbo reaches maximum output at lower RPM than the non turbo engine.

a carry over R18a engine for the base model is crap. Why not the 2.0 earthdreams?.. The new civic is both practical and sporty (the 1.5 turbo plus the loads of space to boot.) The 1.5 turbo is also dyno tested at 177hp and 258Nmm torque - a lot higher than the brochure specs - stock!.

So what, using a turbo meant Honda just went against their philosophy since the 70s that small, naturally-aspirated engines with VTEC are the way to go for performance and fuel-efficiency. They were desperate to keep up with the competition and using a turbo is the easiest, cheapest and laziest way to do it. RIP Honda. They ran out of original ideas. Just another me-too manufacturer.

Napilitan ang Honda gumamit ng Turbo para makahabol sa naturally-aspirated 2.0L engines ng Mazda (165hp at 14:1 CR) at Ford (170hp). Obviously VTEC alone can't cut it anymore, since it is an '80s tech na rin. They ran out of new ideas, so they are relying on their 80s-90s reputation now.

DeleteHavent had the (dis)pleasure of driving a cvt but my gf has cvt equipped car and I feel it lacks power from the get go...or maybe its because she drives reaaally slow.

Can anyone outline in detail the differences between the 1.8 E and RS Turbo variants? I just want to discern subjectively if the difference is worth 200k. Many thanks:-)
ReplyDeleteHindi totoo na majority gusto automatic..WALA LANG KASE CHOICE and discounts given kase. Kahit look at stats how many MT cars are being sold if available on a certain variant vs its matic variant.
