MIAS 2016: Chevrolet Wants Piece of the Entry-Level Car Pie with the Sail

When you have the company president participate in a flash mob along with his entire management staff, you know the confidence they have in their new product. That’s exactly what Atty. Albert Arcilla, President and Managing Director of Chevrolet Philippines did as the company danced their way, revealing the newest member of the bowtie family, the all-new Sail in the process.

Realizing that the entry-level passenger car is the fastest growing automotive segment in the country, Chevrolet is entering into it head-on with the all-new Sail. Developed primarily for developing countries, the all-new Sail is built on the new-generation small car architecture and contains a bevy of family design cues such as the dual-port front grille. Apart from being stylish, the Sail’s sculpted and slender exterior hides one of the most spacious interiors in its class.

Designed, developed, and manufactured leveraging GM’s global processes, the Sail meets the highest levels of quality. It complies with G0 global vehicle durability test standards for road conditions around the world. About 48,000 km of architecture tests, 2.8 million km of simulated road tests, 350,000 km of powertrain tests, and 640,000 km of emission tests were carried out.

Ensuring a peppy yet efficient drive, the all-new Sail is powered by a 1.3-liter engine mated to a 5-speed manual while the 1.5-liter engine comes with a 4-speed automatic. The smaller engine generates 103 horsepower and 127 Nm of torque while the larger one maxes out at 113 horsepower and 141 Nm of torque.

It comes with an electric power steering system for stable cornering even at high speed, but improved fuel consumption. It also features a robust safety cage keeping passengers safe in the event of a collision. Up to 5.7 percent of the body is made of PHS hot-rolled steel for high tensile strength (at least 1,300 MPa).

Now available for reservations with sales to formally begin in June, the Sail is marketed as “your first car, your first Chevrolet.” To this end, it comes equipped with features such as a moon roof and an advanced infotainment system.

Exported from GM’s plant in China, the Chevrolet Sail was named by J.D. Power as the Best Premium Compact Car in Initial Quality and Most Appealing Premium Compact Car in China, one of Chevrolet’s major markets, making it one of the best-selling subcompact sedans in the Chinese market. The Sail is also available in countries in Asia and soon in South America, further strengthening the presence of the Chevrolet brand across the globe.

Locally, the all-new Sail comes in three variants: the 1.3 L M/T (P 688,888), 1.5 LT A/T (P 768,888), and 1.5 LTZ A/T (P 816,888). Chevrolet dealerships nationwide are accepting orders with official release starting in June.

    1. Yeah, unfortunately even the best selling subcompact sedan in the Philippines is also equipped with only a measly 4 speed AT. Go figure.
