What's the Global Impact of Toyota Selling Nine Million Hybrids?
Toyota Motor Corporation has just announced a significant milestone for its hybrid technology: the sale of nine million units (9,014,000 according to their official figure) globally. What’s even surprising is the increased uptake with the last million being sold in just the past nine months.
As a company, Toyota has taken on the challenge of making hybrids available to the mass-market. Today, they offer 33 hybrids and one plug-in hybrid globally. This number includes some peculiar cars such as a hybrid model of their popular Sienta (a small MPV also sold in Indonesia, surprisingly), the Corolla and Levin in China as well as the RAV4.
Toyota’s hybrid line-up has a wide reach, being sold in more than 90 countries and territories. As such, Toyota estimates that 67 million fewer tons of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) has been produced and 25 million kiloliters (25,000,000,000—that’s a lot of zeros) of gasoline saved when compared to conventional gasoline-powered cars of the same class.
It doesn’t stop there. Announcing the Toyota Environmental Challenge 2050 last October, Toyota will reduce the global environmental impact of automobiles as close to zero as possible. In order to fulfill these challenges, Toyota is working to expand its lineup of hybrid vehicles even further and will work to contribute to the environment by achieving annual sales of 1.5 million units, and cumulative sales of 15 million units by 2020.
Toyota launched the Coaster Hybrid EV in August 1997 and the Prius—the world’s first mass-produced hybrid passenger vehicle—in December of the same year. Since then, Toyota hybrid vehicles have received tremendous support from consumers around the world.
