The country’s best-selling passenger car and its more stylish sibling get a heart transplant this August. The 2016 Toyota Vios and Toyota Yaris are now both equipped with a Dual VVT-i and CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) across the line.
In the spirit of kaizen or continuous improvement, both of Toyota’s sub-compact offerings feature the new NR-series engine for better mileage and fuel economy, lower emissions, and slightly higher horsepower. The Vios and Yaris are offered in 1.3- and 1.5-liter flavors. The 1.3-liter variant comes with 99 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 123 Nm of torque at 4,200 rpm. Meanwhile, the larger 1.5-liter variant pushes out 106 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 140 Nm of torque at 4,200 rpm. In tandem with the new engine is a brand-new automatic gearbox. The old 4-speed automatic is now replaced with a new CVT transmission with 7 virtual gears. Some variants are still available with a row-it-yourself 5-speed manual.
Aside from the new drivetrain, both the Vios and Yaris get a slew of changes refreshing them inside and out.
The 2016 Vios gets chrome trim on the fog lights for the G variant while adding two new shades: Alumina Jade Metallic and Blackish Red Mica. Meanwhile the Yaris gets a snazzier seat fabric and a new dark silver face display for the audio head unit.

CVT...meh!
ReplyDeleteWhat's with the prejudice? Have you driven one yet?
Delete99HP@6000RPM. Wow. Not.
ReplyDeleteProbably Autoactiv and then he's gonna say the mighty Colorodo is so good again.
DeleteI've read some bad reviews about CVT mostly because of noise, and more painful its inability to be fixed in case it conks out. I know many would immediately say improper maintainable but fact is sometimes luck is not on your side and it does stil break down. The question is, can a properly maintained CVT last 15 to 20 yrs?
Delete.. improper maintenance
DeleteCVT for 20 years? I don't think so. This is one of those planned obsolescence cases.
DeleteIf kaizen means continues improvement how come it took 15 years and three generations to give it some marginal improvement
ReplyDeleteIt is still better than a Santa Fe or any Korean car cause it's a Japanese brand.
ReplyDeleteno it's not
DeleteWhat is the value of the Japanese brand nowadays since they are built in Thailand? My wife had the 2014 Vios when it came out in and had lots of problems. Its construction is very flimsy and its very underpowered in highways and uphill especially the automatics. I couldn't see any positive thing to say about it. Thankfully, we sold it. Koreans build better cars than this crap.
ReplyDeleteToyota needed to milk buyers first before making a small step into this KAIZEN thing. They needed all 15 years to do that. That's a lot of milk, people!.. and what do we get ? - a shitty CVT and a dual VVT engine that's plauged with issues. (toyotaclub.net)
ReplyDeleteWhich is better to buy? Vios 1.5 g or ford ecosport trend? Can you suggest a car that is fuel efficient, reliability, and practical? Consider also the comfort and maintenance.. thanks a lot

ReplyDeleteCVT are not good in terms of acceleraion. It looks like CVT's have a mind on its own, sometimes it does not obey the driver's right foot, which makes it dangerous in overtaking maneuvers.
ReplyDeleteThe Japanese engineering make cvt good in acceleration and overtaking situation. So mas magaling pa kau sa kanila? Wala nman perpekto na makina sa inyo kc mga bobo kau, este matatalino
Delete6000 RPM is the max! Youll blow the engine to get 99 horses.

DeleteI never had a vios but i knew the ride and comfort by commuting with uber and taxi.. but my Honda City.. you will never know. You both a car that you already owned in the street before.. not worthy of your savings for a bnew one.
ReplyDeleteI agree.. I bought a 1995 corolla kasi marami daw pyesa and mura.. but after several years.. wala na mabili kasi pinapakyaw na ng mga taxi owners mga used parts.. matuto na sana yung iba at wag makinig sa matatanda.
