Mazda is proving just how flexible its manufacturing processes can be. In order to respond quickly and flexibly to the growing demand for its second-generation CX-5, the company just announced that they’ll be producing it at the Hofu Plant in Yamaguchi prefecture. This is in addition to the Hiroshima Plant where it’s currently being produced.

Mazda’s flexible production system will help them meet their global sales goal of 1.65 million units as laid out in the company’s “Structural Reform Stage 2 medium-term business plan” which runs from 2017 to 2019. The CX-5 is the second crossover to be produced at both plants with the CX-3 being the first to be produced at both Hofu and Hiroshima since December last year.

“As with the CX-3, starting production of the CX-5 at Hofu Plant as well is part of our plan to build a production framework that gives us more flexibility between plants and between models,” said Masatoshi Maruyama, Managing Executive Officer in charge of Global Production. “We will do everything we can to get customers the crossover vehicles they want as quickly as possible.”

Launched in Japan last February, the all-new CX-5 is already proving to be popular. It’s reached a one-month sales record of 16,639—about 7 times its monthly target.

The flexible manufacturing process of Mazda could mean less waiting time for Philippine customers as the all-new CX-5 is slated to make its market debut at the Manila International Auto Show at the end of this month.
