Born for Freedom, Built for the City Streets: 2017 Harley-Davidson Street Rod Launched

Harley-Davidson of Manila launches the all-new 2017 Street Rod, a new kind of motorcycle that offers the same open road feeling of freedom, but engineered to thrive in the city. Built to take on the cityscape, the Street Rod is about offering exhilarating performance in a confidence-inspiring package.

The Street Rod features a tuned High Output Revolution X 750 engine. This liquid-cooled single OHC 8-valve 60-degree V-Twin engine produces 18 percent more horsepower (68.4 horsepower) and 8 percent more torque (64 Nm) than the Street 750. More than just peak power, the Street Rod is tuned to deliver better mid-range punch (between 4,000 to 5,000 rpm) together with a higher redline (9,000 rpm).

Harley-Davidson extracted more power from the engine through a larger volume air box, dual 42-mm throttle bodies, a new four-valve cylinder head, high-lift camshafts, and a higher volume exhaust muffler. Even the compression ratio has been raised from 11.0:1 to 12.0:1.

This bigger hitting motor is matched with beefier brakes with dual two-piston calipers and a 300-mm front disc brake. Anti-lock brakes (ABS) is standard.

Together with the inspired performance, the chassis also offers sharper handling thanks to a revised geometry and design.

The front-end features rigid 43-mm upside down forks gripped by lightweight aluminum yokes. The fork rake is tightened from 32 to 27 degrees for quicker maneuverability. Even the riding lean angle has been increased to 37.3 degrees right and 40.2 degrees left.

At the back, new rear shock absorbers feature an external reservoir to increase fluid capacity, thereby maintaining a more consistent damping while longer travel suspension (up 31 percent) gives a more pliant ride. Correspondingly, the swing arm has been lengthened to accommodate the taller shocks; this also happens to gift the Street Rod its performance-inspired styling.

The Street Rod comes with a liberal dose of Harley-Davidson’s Dark Custom styling. Thick, blacked-out forks and triple camps, topped with a new speed screen (color-matched to the bodywork except for a black center insert) adds mass to the front end while a new tail section with a perforated rear mudguard lightens the backend. The taillight is lit with crisp LEDs as are the signal indicators. The styling is capped off by 17-inch Open Spoke Black Cast aluminum wheels with 120/70 R17 V front and 160/60 R17 V tires at the back.

Made for the city, the Street Rod does not compromise in practicality and usability. It comes with a slew of changes that make it more comfortable and easier to use. First, it features a new seat design that holds the rider firmly in place with a raised seat height for improved visibility. Then, the flat drag-style handlebar affords a more aggressive riding position while bar-end rearview mirrors can be mounted above or below the grips. And thanks to a patented design, it allows them to be folded back without interfering with the rider’s hands. Finally, new forged brake/gear levers and aluminum foot pegs make it easier for more riders to get good ground reach when stationary.

Set to raise eyebrows and reset expectation of what a Harley-Davidson is, the Street Rod is now available at Harley-Davidson of Manila in three colors: Vivid Black, Charcoal Denim, and Olive Gold.
