Audi's New Model Naming Emphasizes Power, Not Displacement

People often criticize that Audi vehicles are styled more like a Russian Matryoshka Doll in that it’s hard to tell an A3 from an A4 or an Q3 from a Q5. Well, it seems Audi is thinking the same thing since they’re moving to add some visual differentiation through, you guessed it, new badging.

Starting with the all-new A8, Audi is ditching the familiar displacement-based badging (2.0 TDI, 3.0 TFSI, etc.) to something that publicly displays the specific power output of your new Audi. Using kilowatts (kW) as the basis, Audi is sub-classifying its model range using a two-number value. For example:
  • 30 for models with between 81 and 96kW (107 and 127 horsepower)
  • 35 for models with between 110 and 120kW (145 and 159 horsepower)
  • 40 for models with between 125 and 150kW (165 and 198 horsepower)
  • 45 for models with between 169 and 185kW (223 and 244 horsepower)
  • 50 for models with between 210 and 230kW (278 and 304 horsepower)
  • 60 for models with between 320 and 340kW (423 and 449 horsepower)
  • 70 for models with more than 400kW (529 horsepower)
In each case, these numerals appear along with the engine technology: TFSI, TDI, g-tron, e-tron. For example, the Q2 1.6 TDI will become the Q2 30 TDI. That said, the high-performance S and RS models and the R8 will retain their classic names because of their position as the top dog in their model range.

Now, eagle-eyed readers will notice that the lead photo indicates “55 TFSI.” Oddly enough, Audi has yet to reveal the parameters of the 55 models, but they are believed to carry around 328 to 368 horsepower (245 to 275 kW).

The new model naming scheme is global. This means future Audi models, including those in the Philippines will have the new naming scheme. It’s believed that the first batch will arrive in the country by the second half of 2018.
