Seems Like Nissan is Going to NISMO Everything
In a bid for global domination, Nissan is going to NISMO everything. That’s the gist when the carmaker released a preview of what’s to come at their 2017 Tokyo Motor Show display. Though their theme sticks to “Nissan Intelligent Mobility”, one cannot help but see that Nissan’s about to make everything sporty including an EV and a van.
Launched last September, Nissan is previewing what a high-performance EV could look like. Though purely a concept at this point, the Leaf NISMO Concept went through Nissan’s in-house motorsports and tuning division. The result is a new body kit that promotes better aero performance without sacrificing the Leaf’s low drag co-efficient. And being sporty, it’s got red accents inside and out too. Under the hood, the Leaf NISMO Concept is said to pack a custom-tuned computer for “instant acceleration.” To handle all that power, it’s got a sport suspension and stickier tires too.
Perhaps an odd choice to NISMO-fy, the Serena will get an aggressive body kit changing the family-friendly, utilitarian van into one that promotes “head-turning styling and exhilarating performance.” Apart from the custom aero parts, the Serena NISMO also gets red interior accents as well as a sport-tuned suspension. Thankfully, it’s not all show and no go. The Serena NISMO packs a custom engine control module and exhaust system. And unlike the Leaf NISMO, the Serena NISMO is already heading to Japanese showrooms by November 2017.
Nissan’s move to tap into NISMO’s brand panache is in line with their strategy to expand that area of the business to more markets and segments. Whether that’ll be well-received by hardcore enthusiasts though is another matter.
