The i-ACT or Inter-Agency Council on Traffic, collectively made up of the Land Transportation Franchising & Regulatory Board (LTFRB), Land Transportation Office (LTO), Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), and the Philippine National Police – Highway Patrol Group (PNP – HPG) has started to weed out decrepit and polluting passenger jeepneys under the Tanggal Bulok, Tanggal Usok program.
Supporting the government’s PUV Modernization Program, this campaign will entail a “360-degree check of PUVs’ road worthiness.” According to i-ACT, they will not be issuing tickets yet, rather it will serve as a warning to PUV drivers and operators to comply with road worthiness standards.
Although the Department of Transportation (DOTr) has clarified that jeepneys are not being phased out under the PUV Modernization program, they seek to transition today’s PUVs into “high-quality public transit vehicles” that can be more comfortable, clean, and safe.
Tanggal Bulok, Tanggal Usok has chosen three major thoroughfares: EDSA, Commonwealth Avenue, and Marcos Highway for its pilot implementation. If successful, they plan to deploy this to more areas nationwide.
