Hyundai Asia Resources, Inc. certainly sprung a surprise at MIAS when they decided to launch the Kona sub-compact crossover for the Philippine market. While some people are understandably upset that the Creta is MIA, the Kona is still a much-needed boost to HARI’s SUV offering in the country.

Bold, unique, and certainly like no other Hyundai before it, the Kona will generate buzz the same way the Genesis Coupe did a few years back. Unlike Hyundai’s rear-wheel drive performance offering though, the Kona isn’t gunning for a niche market. In fact, it finds itself competing in one of the most cutthroat segments in the industry.

Naturally, we just had to see how the 2018 Kona stacks up against its similarly priced rivals: the Nissan Juke, Honda HR-V, Chevrolet Trax, Mazda CX-3, Suzuki Vitara, and Subaru XV. You can skip the entire story and head over to the high-resolution chart below, or you can opt to read on.

Mechanically, the Kona is one of the more well-endowed crossovers in its category thanks to its 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine. Power-wise, it’s easily up there, outpowering everyone but the Subaru XV. Sadly though, it’s a bit down on torque.

In terms of exterior dimensions, the Kona is one of the smallest in its segment with only the Juke being just 30 millimeters shorter. Yet, it’s got one of the longest wheelbase and easily matches the Subaru XV in terms of width. When it comes to the all-important ground clearance battle, its 170-mm puts it mid-pack with the Juke, HR-V, and Subaru XV all riding taller. One surprising thing? It’s quite portly with only the all-wheel drive equipped Subaru XV and Nissan Juke being heavier.

Inside, it’s got one of the biggest head rooms in its class (front and back) while that extra width translates to the third biggest front and second biggest shoulder room. The Kona’s short overall length did affect its rear legroom: it’s the second tightest in this bunch, beaten even by the Mazda CX-3.

Finally, when it comes to its list of standard equipment, the Kona comes across as being reasonably loaded for its price, but it must be said that the cheaper Nissan Juke and Suzuki Vitara beats it.
