Mazda's Skyactiv-X Wins First Award (And It's Not Even Out in the Market Yet)

Mazda Motor Corporation has been awarded Gold at the Edison Awards for its breakthrough Skyactiv-X compression-ignition engine. Skyactiv-X, the world’s first commercially available compression-ignition engine, took top honors in the Engine Enhancements category, competing against other technologies in automotive, heavy transportation and aerospace industries, among others.

“We are humbled that Edison Awards steering committee and industry leaders selected Mazda’s Skyactiv-X engine for a gold award,” said Masashi Otsuka, VP of R&D and design, Mazda North American Operations. “Mazda’s goal is to create a sustainable path forward, introducing cars and technologies that enrich people’s lives as well as society. This award means a great deal to the men and women who are building our future throughout Mazda Motor Corporation.”

A part of Mazda’s forward-looking Sustainable Zoom-Zoom 2030 plan, Skyactiv-X implements Spark Controlled Compression Ignition (SPCCI) to seamlessly transition between compression ignition and spark ignition. Using a spark plug as a control mechanism, Skyactiv-X is able to finely balance ignition timing and its air-to-fuel ratio, maximizing fuel-efficiency. The net result combines the efficiency and torque of a diesel with the high-revving drivability and lower CO2 emissions of a gasoline engine.

The benefits of greater torque and responsiveness allow Mazda’s engineers to more closely space gear ratios for quicker acceleration without impacting efficiency, complementing Mazda’s human-centric Jinba Ittai: “horse and rider as one” driving dynamics. Mazda will introduce Skyactiv-X in a production vehicle next year.

Originally established in 1987 by the American Marketing Association, but an independent organization since 2008, the Edison Awards have recognized and honored some of the most innovative products and business leaders in the world and is among the most prestigious accolades honoring excellence in new product and service development, marketing, design and innovation.

  1. ... and that means the award has no meaning in real life.

    Give me a break.

    1. It's about the innovation aspect of it. Let's see if the car it's connected to will do well.

    2. Mazda worshipper's delusion of grandeur. Trust me theyre coming again.

    3. There's no delusion of grandeur here, it is reality. This is the holy grail of internal combustion engine, which your beloved brand can only dream of.

    4. A worshipper. Slow claps

    5. How can you rebut this "worshiper's" statement? What he says is true anyway.

    6. Mazda's rotary engine won awards for innovation as well.

      But what did everyone get?

A highly unreliable and thirsty engine.

At least that award was given a year after the RX-8's release so this one's even worse of an award.

  2. Those haters gonna hate. They seem to have practicality as the no.1 thing on their minds. They hate that they can't set aside some practicality for what the brand is known for.

    1. Practiciality? Hah, ganun din naman kayo, takot sumubok ng Ford, VW o Chevrolet. Mga duwag!

    2. @ 1:04AM takot? Nah. More on di lang talaga maganda. Mazda on the other hand, is still a looker. Maganda na, fun pa i-drive.

    3. Scared? The Mazda 3 is a lot better than the current focus overall. The focus doesn't have the space advantage of the Civic, but it is fine because its in the compact segment. The advantages of the Focus is more power and the self parking feature which would lead to a dismal fuel consumption and I don't need the self parking feature because I know how to park well. The similarity is that they both have more expensive parts than the other popular brands.

    4. Overall? Yeah maybe. But when you consider buying a car under 1.1M the strength of the focus will shine. Imagine 1.5L turbo for 1.088M. And yeah, its much more exciting and fun to drive than the mazda 3 2.0L which costs about 200k more. I tried it, it was definitely fun.

    5. Before you guys start celebrating about this wonderful engine. RCCI engine is also at the works and it surpasses the thermal efficiency of Skyactiv X which you call the Holy grail.

GM is on a breakthrough as well. :)

  3. Mazda ain't perfect, it's far being one contrary to the statements of majority of its fanboys/fangheys. But its rise from once being a forgettable brand to being one the best in the mass market segment is good for us consumers. It's a threat to that super greedy carmaker with a T badge that they better up their game or else time will come, they'll lose a significant portion of their market share to Mazda.

    Keep it up Mazda.

    1. Honda is following in Toyota's path, I hope they follow Mazda's path rather than Toyota, which is higher price but less equipment due to the public's ignorance. True, the Mazda 3 ain't perfect, I have a few minor problems with mine. Side mirror folding bug which fails to open sometimes completely(I do not know if someone forcefully opened it), the HUD had a bug in which it fails to fully deploy(around an inch) which makes it not view able while still working, scratchy piano black accents, major parts takes around a month to arrive. Despite these problems, it has been a rewarding experience as an owner. The looks, the power, the handling, the interior design and quality, the sound system, almost everything is amazing for the price. It's been 16 months and the original battery hasn't failed yet, which critics highly criticize. Their customer service is very responsive and caring, which is a surprise due to the critic's statements prior to buying one. Will probably buy this new one when it becomes available here in the future.

  5. the question is the definition of fun to drive? On the automotive journals for example sa US, the 3 and Civic are right up there but the Corollas are the best selling. These car brands reliability are not too far behind sa ratings. One of intangible is brand marketing, Toyota is really good on this matter.

  6. Love takes time to heal when you're hurting so much. Can't you see that I was so blind to let you go? I can't stand the pain inside 'cause love takes time. I don’t want to be here alone.
