Do you love the current-generation Ford Mustang? Good. Because Ford just said that its replacement will be delayed by at least a year.

A report from Automotive News says that Ford CEO Jim Hackett reportedly pushed back the launch of the seventh-generation Mustang to sometime in 2021. Though Ford didn’t publicly give a reason for the delay, the news outlet surmises that it has to do with the Mustang’s move to a new modular platform.

The new platform, which will also underpin the all-new Explorer and an all-electric crossover, both due in 2020, may offer Ford the chance to develop an all-wheel drive version of the famed Pony Car in addition to the already confirmed hybrid engine option.

Despite the rather shocking changes to a well-loved recipe, members of the Mustang team were quoted saying that the move to a new modular platform “won’t hurt their design creativity.” It also won’t “bastardize [the] Mustang.”
