Hyundai to Develop Its Own Spark-Compression Gasoline Engine
Mazda’s Skyactiv-X may soon have a competitor. Hyundai has been awarded by the U.S. Department of Energy with a USD 4.95 million (~ P 267 billion) over 3 years to conduct research and development for “an advanced mixed-mode gasoline spark/compression ignition engine.”
The new advanced engine technology is planned to be used in future production vehicles both as existing stand-alone and hybrid configurations. The move also comes as Hyundai Motor Group announced plans to introduce 38 eco-friendly models by 2025.
The plan includes the “Smart Stream” powertrain family. With Smart Stream, Hyundai is aiming for improved fuel economy and reduced exhaust emissions.
Smart Stream technology optimizes the existing powertrain structure, with engine components reduced in size and weight to enhance fuel efficiency. With the advanced combustion techniques of Smart Stream engines, Hyundai Motor Group aims to maximize thermal efficiency by up to 50 percent.
Among the Smart Stream technologies include the first commercial application of Continuously Variable Valve Duration (CVVD) technology. In the Smart Stream G 1.6 turbo engine, the opening and closing of the cylinder valve is timed to best respond to various driving modes, such as eco-driving or dynamic driving.
This new development roadmap also represents the next step for Hyundai Motor toward realizing the ultimate ambition of creating a cleaner environment through eco-friendly vehicles.
