Peugeot e-LEGEND CONCEPT Shows EVs Need Not Look Like Soap Bars
Peugeot says EVs need not look like bars of soap. With the e-LEGEND Concept, the carmaker taps into their past while looking forward to the future. In the end, they’re promising a future that’s “unboring.”
An emotive coupe, the e-LEGEND draws its heritage from the Peugeot 504 Coupe. It reinterprets classic design themes such as its light, athletic silhouette; a cabin arched towards the rear section; and a large glass area. From there, it gets modern day Peugeot cues like the unique feline lighting signature. 19-inch rims fill each corner, all of them shod with production Michelin tires.
The large glass area opens up to an airy cabin. From there, Peugeot designers focused on giving it a warm, inviting atmosphere to counterbalance the all-digital cockpit. For instance, they’ve chosen velvet to line the seats. Interwoven with a mesh pattern, it looks technical and aligned with the current 3008 or 5008. Then, there’s the use of Paldao wood on the upper parts and doorways, yet another throwback to 60s design. And like the 3008 and 5008, a fragrance diffuser scents the vehicle.
Most importantly, Peugeot is incorporating a realistic powertrain with the e-LEGEND. It’s 100 percent electric powered by 100 kWh batteries. All in all, it makes in excess of 450 horsepower and 800 Nm of torque distributed to all four wheels. 0-100 km/h is reached in less than 4 seconds and maximum speed is pegged at 220 km/h. The range? 600 kilometers, 500 of which are accessible in 25 minutes thanks to a fast recharging system.
The e-LEGEND then goes a bit sci-fi. It incorporates autonomous driving into the mix. Here, they’re offering two modes: Soft and Sharp which changes not only the car’s driving, but the cockpit configuration as well. And if the driver wants to take over, there are two modes available: Legend and Boost.
Peugeot looks to be on the right track with the e-LEGEND. Although there are currently no plans to bring this into production as is, if future Peugeot EV models get some sprinkling of e-LEGEND here and there, surely more people will consider them as their next car.
