Automotive publication Wards has released its coveted 10 Best Engines list for 2019 and it shows, more than ever, the trend towards electrified powertrains.
After narrowing down the choices to 34 engines (diesel, gasoline, and electric), WardsAuto editors spent two months evaluating them during “routine commutes in metro Detroit.” During that time, they observe power, NVH management, fuel economy, and the application of new technology.
Ward’s also doesn’t categorize engines—they’re meant to compete against all others. and they also cap off their choices to a vehicle with a best price no higher than USD 64,000 (~ P 3,376,000). The publication chose the following as their 10 Best Engines for 2019:
- 3.0L (B58) DOHC Turbocharged I-6 (BMW X5)
- 6.2L OHV V-8 with DFM (Chevrolet Silverado)
- 5.0L DOHC V-8 (Ford Mustang GT/Bullitt)
- 3.0L DOHC TurboDiesel V-6 (Ford F-150)
- 2.0L DOHC Atkinson i-VTEC 4-Cyl./HEV (Honda Accord Hybrid)
- 120-kW Fuel Cell/Electric Propulsion System (Hyundai Nexo)
- 150-kW Propulsion System (Hyundai Kona EV)
- 2.0L DOHC VC-Turbo 4-Cyl. (Infiniti QX50)
And while the take-rates for V8 engines have been dropping recently, the publication calls Ford’s latest 5.0-liter V8 “pitch perfect” making them “smile every time they punch the throttle.”
