Mitsubishi's Developing a Trail-Ready Montero Sport

Remember a month ago, Mitsubishi showed off the Strada (aka L200/Triton) Absolute? It’s supposed to be an off-road ready version with widen tracks, increased suspension travel, and of course, meaty all-terrain tires. Well, it looks like the Japanese automaker is considering the same treatment for the Montero Sport.

Called the Shogun Sport in the United Kingdom, Mitsubishi created the Shogun Sport Special Vehicle Projects or Shogun Sport SVP. Like the Strada Absolute, it gets a tweaked chassis that’ll boost its off-road credentials even more than the standard model.

Designed and engineered with the help of Walkinshaw Performance, a name synonymous with high performance sportscars and motor racing, the Shogun Sport/Montero Sport SVP aims to improve both off-road comfort and on-road dynamics over the stock Montero Sport. To get this, they’ve widened the tracks by 40 mm, added Koni shocks, and 18-inch black alloy wheels with BF Goodrich all-terrain tires.

The rest of the mechanicals remain unchanged though. This means it gets the 2.4-liter MIVEC turbo diesel engine with 181 horsepower and 430 Nm of torque. It also comes fitted with an 8-speed automatic and a Super Select 4WD system with center and rear locking differentials.

For the show car, the Montero Sport SVP comes fitted with an LED lightbar on the roof, rally-style PIAA LED driving lamps, a rear spoiler, a new front grille, black head- and taillamp surrounds, and a decal package. Inside, it gets special seats with additional side bolstering.

A concept model for now, Mitsubishi says they’re showcasing the Montero Sport SVP to gauge customer interest (just like the Strada Absolute). However, the carmaker says they are indeed developing an off-road package for the Montero Sport and that they might be able to release it as early as the middle or third quarter of this year. Keep your fingers crossed and hopefully it’ll make its way to the Philippines too.
