With 181 horsepower from its 2.0-liter Skyactiv-G engine, you would think the Mazda MX-5’s performance has already been maximized. Well, apparently, it can do more. How does 202 or 220 horsepower sound?

The U.K.-based Mazda performance specialist BBR found the additional power by focusing on upgrades that improve the 2.0-liter engine’s breathing. The list isn’t as extensive as you’d think, limited to just a new 4-into-1 high-flow tuned length stainless steel exhaust manifold, cold air intake system, high-flow K&N air filter, and a custom ECU remap.

Along with 18 more horses, it’s also worth noting that BBR also raised the peak torque to 223 Nm (up 13 Nm) at, get this, 3,950 rpm—900 rpm lower than the stock motor. Given the MX-5 weighs about 1,100 kilograms, BBR says this setup should make it both faster and more user-friendly in any driving situation.

The best news is that BBR’s offering the kit not just for the U.K. market, but for export as well. Called the BBR Super 200, it won’t come cheap as the self-install package costs £1,245 (~ P 81,450) without shipping.

Now, for those who want to go all-out, BBR is offering another package which bumps up the power figure to 221 horsepower from 4,750 to 7,800 rpm and torque to 217 Nm from 3,500 to 7,500 rpm. The added power includes everything in the BBR Super 200 and includes high-performance camshafts, valve springs and retainers.

This package, called the BBR Super 220 costs £2,235 (~ P 146,200) without shipping.
