Your Move, Toyota: BMW Philippines Launches 2020 Z4 (And It's Priced Competitively)

A few days after Toyota Motor Philippines showed off the Supra on the racetrack, SMC Asia Car Distributor Corp., the official importer and distributor of BMW in the Philippines beat Toyota to the punch as they announced the availability of the Supra’s sibling, the Z4 roadster. And it’s priced and featured competitively.

An updated interpretation of the classic roadster concept, the Z4 continues with its low-slung, sporty, and compact appearance. Wrapped around a new design language with fewer lines and a clean-cut surface design, it’s actually longer, wider, and taller than its predecessor while also sporting a shorter wheelbase.

Underpinned by a new platform, the Z4 features extremely high levels of rigidity ensuring sharp responses and improved touring comfort. Its electronically operated black soft top can be opened and closed up to speeds of 50 km/h. In addition, its intelligent lightweight design also enables the Z4 to keep several of BMW’s trademark design cues such as the low center of gravity and the ideal 50/50 front-to-rear weight distribution.

The driver-centric cabin offers Vernasca Leather as standard with model-specific designs for the sport bucket seats. The standard infotainment system comes with 10 speakers, while the higher-trim M40i arrives with the 12-speaker Harman Kardon sound system as standard. Moreover, the highest trim variant gets a heads-up display. An available M Sports package also adds a beefier steering wheel, sports pedals, and driver’s footrest.

For the Philippine market, the Z4 is offered in two variants with one trim level each. The base Z4 sDrive20i comes with the Sport Line and with that, it has high-gloss black on the front crossmember and the rear apron insert as well as 18-inch alloy wheels. Moving up, the Z4 M40i variant advertises its sportier character with Cerium Gray finish for the surrounds and front face of the BMW kidney grille, exterior mirror caps, trapezoidal exhaust tailpipes, and 19-inch alloy wheels.

In terms of performance, the Z4 sDrive20i is powered by a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine making 197 horsepower and 320 Nm of torque, while the Z4 M40i comes with a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-6 making 340 horsepower and 500 Nm of torque. All models come with an 8-speed automatic with the M40i benefitting from a Launch Control function. Furthermore, the M40i arrives with Adaptive M Sport suspension, M Sport brakes, and M Sport differential.

The BMW Z4 is available in 3 colors for the sDrive20i model: Black Sapphire, Glacier Silver, and Mineral White, while the M40i comes in 4 colors: Black Sapphire, San Francisco Red, Alpine White, and Misano Blue. The Z4 sDrive20i comes with an SRP of P 3,990,000, while the Z4 M40i is priced at P 5,790,000. The Z4 also comes with BMW Philippines’s extended 5-year warranty.
