2020 Land Rover Defender to Come in Three Sizes?

The all-new 2020 Land Rover Defender is said to carryover one unique design cue from the previous-generation model: the availability of different wheelbases. The report, which comes from Autoblog (via Autocar India) says the iconic SUV will be offered in three different sizes.

The report says that the new model designations are Defender 90, Defender 110, and Defender 130—something that current Defender owners are familiar with. However, unlike the previous-generation model, the numbers won’t be reflective of the wheelbase.

That said, the Defender 90 will still continue as a two-door variant and will have a wheelbase of 2,588 mm (101.9 inches). At 1,927 mm in height, it will be the tallest of the three new models and is said to be “closest in concept to the previous Defender.”

Moving up, the Defender 110 will have four doors and seating for five to seven passengers. The wheelbase is stretched to 3,022 mm (119 inches). With a 4,757 mm overall length, it’s striking distance to the likes of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class, though the Land Rover’s wheelbase is longer.

Finally, there’s the Defender 130 which is the largest of them all. It shares the Defender 110’s wheelbase, but adds about 300 millimeters (5,100 mm) in length putting it close proximity to the likes of the Mercedes-Benz GLS. This version is said to seat eight passengers. Both the Defender 110 and 130 will stand at 1,915 mm in overall height.

The report also leaks the Defender family’s supposed new powertrain family: a trio of 2.0- and 3.0-liter turbodiesels for the international market. There are also gasoline engines such as the 2.0-liter Ingenium engine with 300 horsepower, a plug-in hybrid with 404 horsepower, and a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 with 400 horsepower. Sadly, but not surprisingly, a manual transmission is not believed to be part of the plan.

With a global debut set at the Frankfurt Show in September, it’ll be surprising to see Land Rover reveal all three variants at the same time. Given that all the test mules seen so far are the four-door version, it’s more likely that the world will see the Defender 110 first and then the Defender 90 and Defender 130 to follow a year after.
