The Covenant Car Company, Inc. (TCCI) is beefing up their MG line-up with their first foray into the highly competitive sub-compact car segment. Launched at the Cebu Auto Show, the MG 5 features class-leading size and packs class-exclusive features at a price that tops below P 940,000.
While comparisons between this and the likes of the Toyota Vios and Honda City are inevitable, MG is actually setting its sights on the Hyundai Reina and Kia Soluto. With that, prices start at just P 658,888 and top out at P 938,888.
The MG 5 is offered four variants:
- MG 5 1.5L Core M/T – P 658,888
- MG 5 1.5L Core CVT – P 718,888
- MG 5 1.5L Style CVT – P 848,888
- MG 5 1.5 Alpha CVT – P 938,888
Powering the MG 5 is a normally-aspirated 1.5-liter 4-cylinder engine making 112 horsepower and 150 Nm of torque. The available transmissions are either a 5-speed manual or a CVT. Four wheel disc brakes are standard across the line
For safety, it comes with 4 airbags, ABS with EBD, tire pressure monitoring, and even electronic stability control that integrates hill hold assist.
The MG 5 is now available at all authorized MG dealerships nationwide in 6 colors: Moon White, Meteorite Black, Carbon Gray, Extreme Speed Red, Morning Gold, and Laser Blue. Like all MG models, it has a 5-year / 100,000-km warranty. It is the center of attention at the Cebu Auto Show, while its Manila launch is slated in October.

Hello Uly, did they provide the differences between the variants?
ReplyDeleteLooks good! Great that it came with a CVT and not a DCT.
They'll give more details soon...but for sure:
DeleteThe Style and Alpha variants will be the ones to get the 10-inch infotainment, sunroof, 360-degree camera, and leather seats.
Likely, the Alpha will be the only one to get 16-inch wheels, LED headlights, and front fog lights (the Style was the one shown at the Cebu Show rocking 15-inchers).
Is CVT better than DCT?
DeleteIt really depends on who makes these transmissions but from my observation CVT are more efficient and more cheaper than DCT and especially more reliable inlight of Ford's Powershit transmission
Delete@Unknown 1 - Really depends on how you define, "better." More reliable, cheaper and more efficient, yes if the Japanese do it. More fun? No.
Delete@Unknown 2 - People who get new cars every 4 or 5 years because they are subsidized by the companies they work for don't care about the resale value.
That brochure sure has a lot of information huh
ReplyDeleteCCC, Chevrolet Philippine representative brochures for me lacks the relevant selling point info. I had a comparative exercise before. I was not able to match chevy's line up vis-a-vis its competitor products. This hopes with MG they had better brochures than those seen in Chevrolet. Challenge for them is how do they translate properly if product info is in Chinese.
DeleteMG ZS top of the line is priced at 998,888 php as per checking. hmm hmm
ReplyDeletethat 60k more. Also, I noticed that MG likes the number 8
DeleteCovenant co. has usually included 8s in the prices of the vehicles it sells here (see also Chevy). It must be a Chinese thing, eh?
DeleteVolkswagen Philippines left the chatroom . . .
ReplyDeleteDo you have MG 5 style at color blue with black interior??
ReplyDeleteAisin is the one making the cvt transmission for this car. It is a pretty formidable competitor.
