Dyson Shows Off Canceled Electric Car

Dyson made waves when they unveiled plans to get into the electric car business in 2017, going against the likes of Tesla. Things though didn’t pan out well for British inventor and entrepreneur James Dyson who had to pull the plug on the project last year.

The businessman, known for his bagless vacuum cleaner planned to sell his own EV by 2021. However, when it was apparent that he had to charge more than USD 182,000 (P 9.2 million~) to make a profit on it, he axed the project because it wasn’t commercially viable.

In his first public comments since the project’s cancelation, Dyson revealed some key facts about the still-born Dyson EV which would have gone against the Tesla Model X.

Codenamed the N526, the Dyson EV is almost identical to the Tesla Model X when it comes to key dimensions (including weight). But Dyson claims his EV had almost double the range (966 kilometers). Also, its twin electric motors would have had a combined 536 horsepower, and a 0-100 km/h time of 4.8 seconds. Top speed? 200 km/h.

The Dyson EV would have also focused on improving car seat design, especially the bolstering. The dashboard would have also been displayed as a “hologram,” which could also be a fancy term for its instrumentation being sort of a heads-up display.

And while the billionaire canceled his EV project, he may market the solid-state batteries to automakers when the technology is ready.

The company bought solid-state battery maker Sakti3 in 2015, but wrote off much of the investment in 2018. Still, Dyson is still developing the technology, which promises a more energy dense battery with less need for cooling.
