Despite Ford’s move to pull out of the passenger car market and concentrate on SUVs and crossovers, things still aren’t so rosy. An industry forecast coming out of the U.S. say the carmaker is canceling the next-generation Edge.

A mid-sized two-row SUV, the Edge isn’t sold in the Philippines, but it is a global model. That being said, its performance hasn’t been that strong. In Europe, Ford has already started pulling it from markets where demand was weak such as France and the U.K. It sold 8,818 units last year, a far cry from the 25,000 to 30,000 predicted sales Ford initially had.

According to AutoForecast Solutions, a U.S.-based global forecasting and consulting firm, the next-generation Edge was supposed to have been launched in June 2023 on a new platform, but tepid retail sales as well as an increasingly crowded midsize crossover segment, with new or planned entries from Chevrolet, Honda, and Toyota, contributed to Ford’s decision to cancel the new program.

The Edge is also being squeezed out by Ford’s upcoming slate of new SUVs, including the Bronco, Bronco Sport and the updated Escape.

The decision to halt the next-generation Edge may mean the end of Ford production in Canada.
