The Ford Mustang Mach 1 Returns After a 17-Year Hiatus


After a 17-year hiatus, the Mustang Mach 1 returns making it the best-performing 5.0-liter V8 in Ford’s stable. Bridging the gap between the Mustang GT and Shelby models, the Mach 1 adds aero enhancements, competition-capable suspension upgrades, and a driver-focused cockpit.

The all-new Mustang Mach 1 is set to become the most track-capable 5.0-liter Mustang ever, courtesy of a newly designed front end, plus Ford Performance parts from the Mustang Shelby GT350 and Shelby GT500 models and an available Handling Package for greater at-limit handling.


 Calling back Chuck Yeager’s feat becoming the first to break the sound barrier—Mach 1—Ford delivered its original Mach 1 in 1969, setting 295 speed and endurance records in its first model year at the Bonneville Salt Flats.

This year, it returns, packing a specially-calibrated 5.0-liter V8 engine that has 480 horsepower at 7,000 rpm and 570 Nm of torque at 4,600 rpm, making it a fitting celebration of a nameplate born more than 50 years ago. To achieve this, it gets several Shelby GT350 components such as the intake manifold, oil filter adapter and engine oil cooler, and increasing engine oil cooling capability by 50 percent.


A 6-speed manual is standard, and this has the GT350’s cool cooler and the Mustang GT’s twin-disc clutch and short-throw shifter. However, the 10-speed automatic is available and this one gets an upgraded torque converter and unique calibration that optimizes torque. A secondary air-to-oil cooler increasing cooling capacity by 75 percent.

The 2021 Mustang Mach 1 wears a new front-end for aero efficiency while also celebrating styling cues from the 1969 original. It gets low-gloss metal (including the pony badge) and black accents throughout. It also gets Tarnished Dark 19-inch wheels measuring 9.5 inches and 10 inches in width, while opting for the Handling Package ups the width to 10.5 inches in front and 11 inches at the back.


The Handling Package (available exclusively with the manual), also includes a larger unique higher downforce front splitter, new front wheel lip moldings, and a low-gloss Magnetic swing spoiler with a Gurney flap.

To improve ride and handling, Mach 1 features the latest MagneRide calibration, a stiffer steering I-shaft, new EPAS calibration, stiffer sway bars and front springs, a brake booster from the Mustang GT Performance Pack Level 2, a rear subframe with stiffer bushings, and a rear toe-link from Shelby GT500.

The 2021 Ford Mustang Mach 1 arrives as a limited-edition model exclusively for U.S. and Canadian Ford dealerships only. Sales will start by early next year.
