The next round of the pickup wars is upon us. It’s all but officially confirmed that the Ford Ranger is due for a full model change by next year.

Inadvertently confirmed by, oddly enough a Volkswagen announcement, it will roll off the production line by 2022 (at least for the European market). The reason for this is that Volkswagen’s pickup truck, the Amarok, will utilize a Ford engineered platform. It will also be built side-by-side with Ford’s own pickup truck.

For its part, Ford merely confirmed that they are developing a “medium-sized pickup truck,” but Volkswagen did confirm that this is the all-new Ford Ranger.

While they do share the same platform, Volkswagen confirms that “design and interfaces will clearly differentiate the two models.” This quashes speculation that the upcoming Ford Ranger and Amarok are merely badge-swapped versions of each other.

Details are currently scarce with regards to the all-new Ranger, but reports say it will gain a more powerful engine. It could be the 3.0-liter V6 diesel fitted in the U.S.-market F-150 serving up 250 horsepower and 597 Nm of torque. The current single and bi-turbo 2.0-liter are expected to continue unchanged as is the 10-speed automatic transmission.
