Hyundai has revealed that its new 2021 Santa Fe isn’t just a simple skin job. The migration to the company’s latest platform means it gets new powertrain and more space compared to the current 2020 model.

Talking about space first, the 2021 Santa Fe is longer, wider, and taller than the 2020 model. And while wheelbase remains the same as the current model (2,765 mm), the intelligent packaging of the platform has increased second and third row space by 30 and 40 mm respectively. Moreover, cargo space is also up by 24 liters (571 liters) with the second row up, and 32 liters (782 liters) with the second row seats down.

Things get even more interesting under the hood. The 2021 Santa Fe retains a choice between a gasoline or diesel-fed engine, both now migrating to the new Smartstream line-up. The gasoline is electrified and pairs its turbocharged 1.6-liter engine with a 60 horsepower electric motor. The combined output is 230 horsepower and 350 Nm of torque. A plug-in hybrid is also due next year. Both of these engines are paired with a newly-developed 6-speed automatic.

Meanwhile, for those who prefer diesel (and a lot of Pinoys sure do), the 2.2-liter Smartstream diesel has undergone a significant 19.5 kilogram weight reduction thanks to a migration from a cast iron to an aluminum block. Higher pressure injectors (2,200 bar versus 2,000 bar) improves performance and helps it generate 202 horsepower and 440 Nm of torque.

This engine can only be mated to an 8-speed dual clutch automatic. Hyundai says this new “wet-type” system has its own dedicated electric oil pump for lubrication. Fuel efficiency is up by 3 percent compared to the previous 8-speed automatic, while acceleration has been improved by around 9 percent.
