The Torsus Terrastorm is Made for Family Vacations in the Most Inhospitable Places
If the Ford Transit Trail still seems too tame for your family’s off-road needs, you’ve got to see the Torsus Terrastorm.
Based off a Volkswagen Crafter, the Torsus Terrastorm is being touted as the world’s first production off-road bus designed to transport people and/or cargo to some of the world’s most inhospitable places.
Powered by a 2.0-liter bi-turbo diesel ngine, the Terrastorm is available in two power guises: 140 horsepower/340 Nm or 176 horsepower/410 Nm. Both can be mated to a 6-speed manual or 8-speed automatic.
The Terrastorm features all-wheel drive with a locking rear differential as standard. An off-road suspension and 17-inch BF Goodrich All Terrain T/A K02 tires means it has 290 of ground clearance as well as an approach angle of 26 degrees and departure angle of 20 degrees. Water wading? Standard at 690 mm, but a “Deep Wave” pack brings it up to 820 mm. The suspension also features Bilstein B6 shock absorbers for comfort and Ironman 4x4 Adjustable Camber bolts that offer up to 1.75 degrees camber adjustment.
The body trim has also been beefed up to match its go-anywhere credentials. There’s an integrated 5.5-ton winch in the front bumper, durable scratch resistant coating on the lower body panels, and a bespoke Duraluminium skid plate running from the engine and gearbox down to the rear differential and fuel tank to protect from being damaged in inhospitable conditions. It can even be speced with a front metal bull bar, rear light metal grilles, roof rack with integrated lights, spare tire rack, and rear ladder.
Inside, the Terrastorm can be made to accommodate between 9 to 20 passengers in comfort. Each passenger seat is built on a strong chassis and skeleton consisting of 2-4mm of sheet metal. While three-point seatbelts are standard, there’s also an “extra active” seats option with 5-point harnesses. And unlike most vans, the seats can be altered to swivel.
Above the seats is a luggage rack offering each occupant individual lighting, air conditioning vents, and speakers. The passenger cabin is lined with 30 mm thermal insulation and the anti-slip floor is 18 mm high-density water-resistant board with 2 mm PVC floor coverings to ensure it is easy to clean and can withstand the inhospitable environments.
Torsus says clients for the Terrastorm typically include those from the mining, cargo, and tourism industries. However, those who love to overland can also get one as well. The Terrastorm is available in both left- and right-hand drive configurations with prices that start at 57,461 Euros (P 3.3 million~).
