2021 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado Joins the 200-Horsepower Club

Toyota’s long-serving Land Cruiser Prado gets an update for 2021 giving it a more powerful engine and added safety features.

In what could be the current Land Cruiser Prado’s last hurrah, Toyota has increased the output of the 2.8-liter 1GD-FTV engine to 204 horsepower. The sizeable 27 horsepower increase is down to a larger turbocharger. Higher trims also receive standard paddle shifters for the 6-speed Super ECT automatic. For those who aren’t fans of the 2.8-liter diesel, the 2021 Land Cruiser Prado is also available with a downsized 2.7-liter 2TR-FE 4-cylinder engine.

Hand-in-hand with the more powerful engine, the 2021 Land Cruiser Prado also gets a refreshed interior with a 9-inch display audio infotainment system. This gives the venerable off-roader smartphone connectivity options that weren’t there before.

For safety, the 2021 Land Cruiser Prado gets added Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) functions such as pre-collision that can detect both pedestrians and bicyclists as well as lane departure alert, road sign recognition.

In Japan, the Land Cruiser Prado has been made available with the “L Package,” which swaps the chrome on the grille, headlamps, fog lamp bezel, back door garnish, side mirrors, and 18-inch wheels to black.

The refreshed 2021 Land Cruiser Prado goes on sale in Japan today. Export markets such as the Philippines will likely follow soon thereafter.
