The 2021 Toyota Corolla Cross is One Sloppy Piece of Design
The Corolla Cross is coming very soon, and with that Toyota Motor Philippines is finally going to devour on a piece of the compact crossover pie. And while spec and pricing details will certainly leak before its launch, let’s talk about one thing: just how sloppy the design is.
You’re not going to hear this from any other local auto website for fear of reprisal from the auto giant, but we’re going to say it anyway: whoever designed this should be sent back to design school. It’s just sloppy. And it’s not just sloppy in a “we don’t care, we’ll just draw character lines” on it sloppy; it’s “we don’t give a crap because we’re going to sell a zillion of these” sloppy.
Much of the online vitriol is directed towards that guppy-like front-end. Sure, that face isn’t exactly pretty, but it doesn’t beat what you see on the other end. Just take a look at that badge placement. Oh my god. For some stupid and weird reason, Toyota designers wanted to put “Corolla Cross” on the tailgate garnish, but just look at that execution. It’s just lazy. With the words, “Corolla” in a small script placed on the left and the words, “Cross” in a much larger script placed in the middle, it doesn’t look aesthetically pleasing at all.
This is certainly a candidate for a de-badging job the moment it’s driven off the showroom floor. A piece of advice for Toyota: just move the badge some place else, like, you know, on the other side of the “Hybrid” badge to balance things out? C’mon Toyota, I know you can do better.
agree. it looks like its taken from the files of unused Subaru XV designs.
ReplyDeleteWhat a waste of time reading this all sloppy article.
ReplyDeleteThanks for still reading though.
DeleteI agree the design is not coherent.
DeleteI dont like toyota... from the lowly Wigo, the taxi Vios, UV express Hi-ace up to their premium camry. But... boy, your article is very mean!!! And even if i dont like toyota, i wouldnt dare tread this path of hatred.. hehehe.
ReplyDeleteWe just say what we think. That's how we are.
DeleteOooh the car doesn't look like CX-30 it must be sloppy. No matter what it still should outsell CX-3 and CX-30 combined. Heck it might even outsell all CX series combined. Looks is just one of the equation and most people don't really mind if it is not the best looking crossover. You know boot space, headroom, larger door openings unlike cough cough, and larger windows also matters for most people that's why Toyota is betting on this more over crisper design that you prefer.
ReplyDeleteOh, it will definitely outsell the entire CX series especially if Toyota prices it right.
DeleteBut read carefully on the thing we hate. We didn't mean we hated the entire car...we just noticed one sloppy design detail which we hate.
I think the Corolla Cross' styling is quite bland rather than sloppy. The front end, which ties well with big brother RAV4, isn't quite worthy of vitriol as Toyota has designed uglier front fascias (2018 Vios, the latest Avalon). It just seems that the designers have already checked out by the time they got to the rear end, which has uninspiring taillight design and the egregious badge placement. Looks like Toyota put more effort in styling the Yaris Cross than this one.
ReplyDeleteI find the design actually inoffensive but the badge placement is criminal. It's funny most people seem to be grabbed by the headline, don't read the article, and go straight to the comment box.
DeleteI agree that the Yaris Cross is much better looking 😊

Anything not Mazda = crap... right?
ReplyDeleteThe CX-3 is definitely crap. Too small, too expensive.
DeleteUly now thats what i call truth haha .. cx3 for its price is how you scam people lol
DeleteYeah. I really don't like the CX-3...the weakest of all the current Mazda products aside from the brother-from-another-mother BT-50.
Deleteis it weird to prefer the overall design of this to its contemporaries?Me wishing that toyota brought the corolla touring instead makes me think that im not the target demographic in these class of vehicles though.
ReplyDeleteFront grill looks like...mazda, subaru and ford. Emblem kinda looks like the blue ford oval...you’re right...its sloppy and confused.
ReplyDeleteI have been reading about this pending intro for a while. And I guess I will be one of the thousands who will get it anyway as I am excited by getting a Hybrid with more space. Agree the back badge has to go. But HOW ? Is there a supplier locally that can do that ? Thanks for the article ! I appreciate your straight forwardness !
ReplyDeleteThank you for your honesty.
ReplyDeleteTHANKS FOR THE REAL REIVEW. SAME HERE BRO ULY.

ReplyDeleteEven their new fortuner, the front looks like xpander.
ReplyDeleteNice review focusing only on what you think is bad... HAHAHA typical BS dilawan.
ReplyDeleteToyota wasted so much goodwill by coming up with this design on it's entry level hybrid car for PH market. They can do better than this but why did they push for this less inspiring design?
ReplyDeleteI actually like the front design even though it looks like an open fish mouth. I think it's the design style now most of the cars front looks like that. The back is too lazy though they could've done better in that area. I agree the branding placement is criminal, the one responsible should be prosecuted.
