Mazda PH's 100th Anniversary Special Edition Models Have Almost Sold Out

Less than a month after announcing its availability for the Philippine market, Mazda Philippines has said that all but two of the MX-5 100th Anniversary Special Edition have been sold (Update: as of September 21, only one unit remains).

With the on-going pandemic actually delaying the production and shipment of the limited-edition roadster (it just arrived this week), Mazda Philippines still didn’t have any trouble moving them. Not only does it show the resilience of the MX-5 as a model, but shows that Filipino enthusiasts will still go out of their way to acquire a future collectible.

Moreover, according to Steven Tan, president and CEO of Mazda Philippines, the tightening of car loans and financing hasn’t had an adverse effect on sales of the MX-5. It has proven to be a shining star for the Japanese brand, selling 15 units even at their worst month.

Only 700 units of various 100th Anniversary Special Edition Mazda models have been produced worldwide, and Japan has stopped taking new orders for export markets (including the Philippines). This means that Mazda Philippines’s allocation of 15 Mazda3 and 24 MX-5 commemorative models will be the only ones available locally.

With 22 of the 24 MX-5 100th Anniversary Special Edition models already sold; Tan says they will focus their attention on the “handful” of Mazda3 Sportback models still available. Even then, this specially decked compact hatchback is showing promise with 100 percent of would-be owners opting for the optional P 75,000 Mazda Speed kit as the Mazda3 100th Anniversary Special Edition doesn’t come with a body kit as standard.
