The Refreshed 2021 Toyota Fortuner, Hilux Will be Fast
While it’s known for its off-road ability, Toyota has now detailed the on-road performance improvements to the 2021 Land Cruiser Prado, specifically when fitted with the new 2.8-liter diesel engine.
As a refresher, Toyota has increased the output of the 2.8-liter 1GD-FTV engine in the Land Cruiser Prado to 204 horsepower and 500 Nm of torque. The sizeable increase of its output (27 horsepower) and torque (50 Nm) is down to several engine improvements including a larger turbocharger. This engine is mated to a 6-speed automatic.
Now, if you’re curious as to what sort of performance improvement this has, well, Toyota says it lowers the 0-100 km/h acceleration time to just 9.9 seconds—an improvement of 3.0 seconds over its predecessor. Maximum speed is pegged at 175 km/h. And despite the newfound performance, it sips less diesel than before—with fuel mileage reaching 14.28 km/L.
Europe, like Japan, also benefits from the addition of Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) which adds Pre-Collision System (PCS) with both night time pedestrian and daytime cyclist detection, and Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control.
Plus, Toyota has also begun offering a special Black Pack over there as well.
Similar to the Japan market “L Package,” this appearance package swaps all the bright chrome for full dark chrome. It’s found on the front grille and rear garnish (a first for the Land Cruiser family), fog lamp bezels, door mirrors, door belt moldings; and clear rear lamp clusters. The interior is enhanced by a black center console and central tunnel treatment.
It remains to be seen whether Toyota Motor Philippines will offer the Land Cruiser Prado with this engine. It must be remembered that local units are still powered by a 3.0-liter D-4D, whereas in Europe, they’ve already received the 2.8-liter diesel since 2017. Regardless, with the upgraded powertrain also heading to the Fortuner and Hilux, these Toyota vehicles will at least see sizable performance gains when they launch real soon.
