Amazon just revealed their new custom zero emissions electric delivery van that’s expected to hit the road in the U.S. by next year. Part of their pledge to be net zero carbon by 2040, Amazon, in partnership with Rivian, will produce 10,000 of these vans by 2022, and by 2030, 100,000.
Aside from emitting no tailpipe emissions, this custom Amazon van prioritizes safety with a suite of highway and traffic assist technology, exterior cameras offering 360-degree view, and bright taillights that surround the rear of the vehicle to easily detect braking.
Also, being a delivery vehicle, it’s customized to satisfy Amazon’s “last-mile delivery” requirements. It has three levels of shelving as well as a “dancefloor” inside the driver’s cabin for easy movement inside the van.
This delivery van can travel up to 241 kilometers (150 miles) on a single charge, and will be the first of three electric vehicle models that Amazon will be launching in partnership with Rivian.
Aside from Amazon which invested some USD 700 million into Rivian, the California-based EV manufacturer also counts Ford as an investor. Despite axing its EV plans for Lincoln, Ford remains committed to Rivian with a USD 500 million investment.
