Honda Cars PH Moves Sub-Compact Sedan Goalpost with All-New 2021 City (w/ Specs)

Honda Cars Philippines wants to turn the tide against the prevalence of sub-compact crossovers by giving its 2021 City the most dramatic and most feature-packed transformation yet. The fifth-generation in Honda’s storied line of sub-compact sedans, the all-new City redefines the segment in every imaginable way.

In terms of appearance, “Civic lite” easily comes to mind with its low and wide appearance. Despite competing in the sub-compact segment, the all-new City is dimensionally close to offerings a size bigger: 4,553 mm in length (+113 mm), 1,748 mm in width (+53 mm), and 1,467 mm in height (-10 mm). LED daytime running lights and LED taillights are standard, as are, depending on the trim, 15- or 16-inch alloy wheels.

For the first time ever, the all-new City gets the RS treatment. Sitting atop the range, the 2021 City RS adds uniquely styled bumpers (with a built-in diffuser out back), machine-finished 16-inch alloy wheels, full LED headlights and front fog lamps, and high-gloss black accents on the grille, mirrors, and spoiler.

Inside, the 2021 City continues with Honda’s “man-maximum, machine-minimum” philosophy giving it with the largest cabin in its class. The new horizontally-oriented interior reduces visual bulk, while more soft-touch points and improved interior materials makes for a truly class-above feel. A traditional two-gauge cluster greets the driver, but at the center is a standard (except for the base MT) 8-inch touchscreen infotainment with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and WebLink. Automatic climate control and keyless smart entry is standard on the V and RS grade.

Just like its exterior, the City RS is well-differentiated inside with its all black interior with sporty red accents. Leather and suede seats come standard as do eight speakers for the infotainment system, and a Civic Type R inspired leather steering wheel and aluminum sports pedals for the driver.

For the Philippine market, all variants of the 2021 City is powered by a new 1.5-liter DOHC i-VTEC engine. This powerplant makes 121 horsepower and 145 Nm of torque, mated to either a 6-speed manual or the Earth Dreams CVT. All variants benefit from the Eco-Coaching light, but only the automatic variants have the Econ Button.

For safety, the latest City scores an impressive 5-star ASEAN NCAP rating. Four airbags (dual front and side-impact), ABS with EBD, and electronic stability control are standard, while the V and RS add a multi-view rear camera. The RS also gets side curtain airbags.

  1. The exterior styling cues are reminiscent of the fourth-generation Jazz - mainly the lights and the grille. I'm glad Honda still sells this with three pedals.

  2. The wheels seem small compared to the body.

  3. The city seems to be getting uglier and uglier as time goes by. For me, the best looking was still the 2009 "transformer" look. Interior was so bland though.
