Hyundai is showing off its newest performance “rolling laboratory” with the RM20e. It’s a further evolution of the Korean carmaker’s supercar aspirations first shown by the RM19 last year.
As its name implies, the “Racing Midship” features rear-wheel drive and a mid-engine powertrain configuration. And now, with the “e” attached to the name, it also means it’s electrified.
The RM20e is a product of Hyundai’s recent investment and partnership with Rimac Automobili. As it stands, it makes 810 horsepower and 960 Nm of torque from a single 800-volt motor It does 0-100 km/h in less than 3 seconds and 0-200 km/h in 9.88 seconds.
Apart from the explosively power zero emissions electric motor, the RM20e utilizes powertrain’s placement and rear-wheel drive layout to achieve the necessary traction for this level of acceleration.
The question is: will it head to production? Well, that’s really up in the air at the moment. While the RM20e is basically a laboratory or sorts—pushing Hyundai’s powertrain and chassis even further, the did confirm that electrification will be part of their future. While 44 eco-friendly models are promised by 2025, the high-performance Hyundai N brand will also be part of that plan.
