Hyundai's WRC-Inspired 2021 i20 N Hits the Road

After releasing the Veloster N and i30 N, Hyundai has unveiled the newest addition to its full-blooded N family: the all-new i20 N. Inspired by Hyundai’s WRC rally car, the i20 N promises fun-to-drive characteristics thanks to its heightened engine performance and technology innovations centered around dynamism and handling.

Under the hood is a 1.6-liter Gamma-II turbocharged engine offering 204 horsepower and 275 Nm of torque. While it doesn’t standout in terms of overall performance, with a curb weight of just 1,190 kilograms, it has one of the best-in-class power-to-weight ratio. Moreover, it can reach a top speed of 230 km/h, and a 0-100 km/h speed in just 6.7 seconds.

Mated to the 1.6-liter T-GDi engine, the 6-speed manual has been refined and reinforced to come with the higher power and launch control system. It can also be equipped with a mechanical limited slip differential to enhance its grip through corners. It also comes with a rev matching function. Like previous N models, the i20 N comes with five driver selectable driving modes which adjusts parameters of the engine, stability control, steering, and even exhaust sound.

The i20 N’s chassis continues with its front MacPherson Strut and rear torsion beam axle, but it’s been reinforced and gets new springs, shock absorbers, and stabilizer bars. In addition, it also gets bigger brakes for increased fading resistance and a more consistent brake pedal feel. At each corner are 215/40R18 Pirelli P-Zero ultra-high-performance tires with the “HN” mark signifying it as a bespoke tire for Hyundai’s N brand.

Sitting 10 mm lower than the stock i20, the i20 N gets a unique front bumper with a larger air intake, a wider radiator grille, unique side sills, and a distinctive WRC-inspired roof spoiler. A triangular rear fog light, a large single exhaust, and tomato red accents complete the changes.

Inside, the i20 N benefits from dedicated sport seats with integrated headrests as well as N-exclusive steering wheel, shift knob, and metal pedals. The digital gauge cluster has also been updated with a variable LED red zone with varies according to engine oil temperature, and a shift timing indicator.

As of now, the Hyundai i20 N is destined to conquer the most discerning hot hatch market in the world: Europe early next year. There are also plans to offer it in select markets elsewhere.
