With only 3,000 manufactured worldwide, MINI Philippines is proud to say that they’ve gotten six of the ultra-rare John Cooper Works GP—the fastest, most capable model that the British brand has ever approved for road use. And it could be yours for P 4.8 million.
The collectible is based off the John Cooper Works (JCW), but tuned for an even more visceral experience. Changes done to transform the JCW into the John Cooper Works GP include a more powerful engine, optimized lightweight construction, increased torsional stiffness, and improved aerodynamics.
At its heart is the 2.0-liter MINI TwinPower Turbo engine now producing 306 horsepower and 450 Nm of torque. Mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox with a mechanical differential lock, this is enough to rocket the JCW GP to 100 km/h in just 5.2 seconds and a top speed of 265 km/h. The added performance is due to a newly-developed turbocharger along with improved cooling. A new sports exhaust with straight-pipe ducting complete the powertrain changes.
The MINI John Cooper Works GP also benefits from a more rigid body structure with reinforcements done to the engine mount, tunnel bridge, and suspension. The suspension, particularly the springs, dampers, and stabilizers have been re-calibrated. It also sits 10 mm lower to the ground compared to the stock JCW. Brakes have also been upgraded to 4-piston front brakes. In terms of driver modes, the JCW GP adds a specific GP mode which raises the threshold before the driver aids kick in.
In terms of design, the JCW GP gets a new front apron and spoiler along with a large roof spoiler. Meanwhile, the wheel arch trim is made of carbon fiber-reinforced plastic. Its exposed matte finish is the first among the entire BMW Group’s. The individual numbering with the numbers “0001” to “3000” is applied to the surfaces of the front wheel arch panels by means of a newly developed paint transfer process. At each corner are lightweight 18-inch forged alloy wheels.
Inside, the MINI John Cooper Works GP is made for driving. It cuts out the two rear seats making it purely a two-seater. It also sheds some interior acoustic insulation for lesser weight. Standard equipment includes a digital gauge cluster, Dinamica/Leather seats, red seat belt straps, a unique steering wheel, and 3D-printed paddle shifters.
The John Cooper Works GP is now on display at the MINI Showroom in Eastwood, Libis.
