Should the upcoming Hyundai Venue and recently-launched Kia Stonic be afraid? Nissan has confirmed that its Magnite sub-compact SUV will be destined for global markets.
Unveiled for the Indian market, the Magnite is Nissan’s first-ever Designed for India vehicle, underscoring the importance of that market for the carmaker. Not only will it increase the brand’s visibility in the subcontinent, according to Guilluame Cartier, Nissan vice-chairman, SVP M&S AMIEO (Africa, Middle East, India, Europe and Oceania), but it will also be sold in other markets later.
Previewed as a concept last July, the Magnite heads to production almost unchanged. It features a strong, geometric styling including a large hexagonal-shaped grille adorned by the new-look Nissan logo. It also features slim bi-projector LED headlights, L-shaped LED daytime running lights, and a two-tone exterior color. At the back, it has a wide split taillamp design.
Inside, Nissan touts the Magnite as a centerpiece of human-centric design. Even compared to the likes of the Venue and EcoSport, it has best-in-class couple seat distance and best-in-class rear knee room. It features a 7-inch TFT digital gauge cluster for the driver, an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, and automatic climate control. Optional features include wireless charger, JBL speakers, and a built-in air purifier. The cargo space is a commendable 336 liters. Safety features include vehicle stability control with hill start assist, tire-pressure monitoring system, and a 360-degree parking camera.
Nissan says despite being made for development markets such as India, the Magnite is engineered and extensively tested at their Tochigi Proving Ground in Japan. It boasts of 205 mm of ground clearance.
Powering the Magnite is a 1.0-liter turbocharged 3-cylinder engine (HR10) with mirror bore coating, a technology also used in Nissan’s iconic GT-R. This engine is mated to a Xtronic CVT gearbox with improved shift quality and a “de-step logic control” for simulated downshifts. It will also have cruise control for long distance driving comfort.
The Magnite will go on sale in India by the end of the year with a starting price of around 500,000 Indian Rupee (P 329,750) to 900,000 Indian Rupee (P 593,550).
