Attention, Mazda owners: if your Apple CarPlay just turned wonky, it’s not just you; it’s pretty much everyone else.
The problem affects Mazda vehicles running on the first-generation Mazda Connect—that’s pretty much every vehicle except for the all-new Mazda3 and CX-30. After the iOS 14.2 update, owners will find that the Mazda Commander Control—the big center clicking wheel—unresponsive. Though owners can navigate the Apple CarPlay menu using the touchscreen interface (or Siri), this is a hassle, since the touchscreen is automatically disabled when the car is in motion.
According to the Apple support forum, the problem isn’t related to the Mazda Connect system (even running the latest Mazda Connect firmware will not solve the problem), but down to iOS 14.2 devices running Assistive Touch turned on. It turns out the “taps” on the Mazda Commander Control aren’t recognized, because they’re registering instead on the iPhone screen instead.
Software developers have already reported the problem to Apple, but while Mazda owners are awaiting a fix, there’s a simple way to make the Mazda Commander Control work again: turn off the Assistive Touch function.
To do this, simply go to Settings > Accessibility > Touch. Make sure that AssistiveTouch is turned off.
UPDATE: This problem has been fixed with iOS 14.3.
