Honda will be the first carmaker in the world to mass-produce a Level 3 self-driving car. This will allow drivers to let their vehicle navigate congested expressway traffic without any steering or pedal input.
There are six designated levels of vehicle autonomy, from 0 to 5, ranging from manual cars or those with simple functions such as cruise control to fully self-driving vehicles that would not need steering wheels, or brake and acceleration pedals.
Level 3 autonomous system, in this case, called Traffic Jam Pilot monitors the driving environment, and can take over driving operations based on factors that include location (it’s GPS locked), weather, and vehicle speeds. In case, driving conditions become unsatisfactory, the system will issue a warning, and the driver must take over immediately.
The chosen vehicle is Honda’s flagship sedan, the Legend and will be made available before the end of the current fiscal year (Honda’s Fiscal Year 2020 ends on March 31, 2021).
Traffic Jam Pilot has also been given approval by the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT). In order to get the Level 3 certification, Honda needs to install a recording device that will keep records for up to 6 months. Moreover, a sticker must be attached on the backside of the vehicle.
